Three rahs and a former Episcopal tiger for your bishop!

He's one of the good guys.

"According to church teaching, the state has the right to protect its citizens from unjust aggressors through use of the death penalty. However, at present the church stresses that non-lethal means – namely life-imprisonment – are more in keeping with human dignity, thus making reasons for recourse to the death penalty almost non-existent. Still, the church does not deny that the state continues to have the right to impose the death penalty. Furthermore, although the life issues are all interrelated, not all of them are of equal importance. In 1998, the bishops of the United States issued Living the Gospel of Life, a pastoral letter that stated categorically that the right to life carried more weight than other issues because it served as their moral foundation."

Bishop Galeone bump! As a fellow parishoner in his Diocese I concur, he's one of the good ones.

To tell the truth, this really surprised me. The bishop is a wonderfully orthodox priest, but somewhat leftwing (he spent a number of years in Latin America) politically. In addition, most of the "pro life" activity in the diocese prior to the time he got here was anti-death penalty stuff, with abortion being a distant second. This didn't seem to change much, at first, and I thought he probably agreed with it. But evidently not.

I also liked his classic question-and-answer format.

Yes, he is. St. Augustine Catholic has also improved enormously. It actually has articles with content now, and it's really worth reading. I don't believe the editor has changes, so it must be the effect of Bishop Galeone!

Actually, I quoted the passage because I thought it was spot on. I don't like the death penalty because it's so frequently abused. Also, because the law is a teacher, the death penalty tends to teach that death is a problem solver -- whereas Christians understand that death is the problem par exellence. Nevertheless, because of the state's duty to defend the innocent, there are times when only the death penalty will do. That's why it can't be forbidden on moral grounds.

St. Augustine Catholic has also improved enormously.

Just got my copy of it after Mass this morning but haven't had time to read it yet. I just got back from being rained out at the golf course. (Hate when that happens).

We're picking our way through fallen trees here in Gainesville right now - very wise of you to stay off the golf course!

I heard the good Bishop at the Knights of Columbus State convention in Florida. He is a good man, and I left electrfied!

I have never seen someone more touched when we Knighted him publically, this only occurs rarely and with permisson of Supreme. Most Knights are only knighted during a ceremony.

He understands the Knights comitment to Life, from conception to natural death, to our community, and our Church better than many Pastors.

May God bless the Most Rev. Bishop Victor Galeone!

Dear Dominick,

That's great.

Having the support of the local bishop is so helpful.

Cardinal McCarrick (yes, that FR-despised prelate) is very supportive of the K of C in our area. It has made a tangible difference in at least a couple of places.

meatless Fridays during Lent.

Galeone needs to be reminded that unless he has indicated another form of penance, all Fridays are still meatless.

Can. 1251 Abstinence from meat, or from some other food as determined by the Episcopal Conference, is to be observed on all Fridays, unless a solemnity should fall on a Friday. Abstinence and fasting are to be observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.

That must have been a wonderful ceremony. I read about it and saw a picture of it in St. Augustine Catholic. I have been really impressed by the way he seems to value the Knights, and this was great!
