LOS ANGELES, USA, Jul. 09, 2004 (CNA) - Mel Gibson is reportedly planning to spend more than $140,000 to keep a cross on a government seal in Los Angeles.
According to sources close to Icon Films, the Hollywood actor-director will actively take part in a campaign, which was begun a religious group to protest against the removal of the cross on the official Los Angeles county seal.
According to The Herald Sun, Gibson expressed his disappointment over the proposed scrapping of the cross because of legal threats from civil rights groups.
On June 1, LA County supervisors caved in to a demand made by the ACLU, which threatened to sue the county if it did not remove the cross. As a result, the county decided to remove the cross.
But the Thomas More Law Center, a national, public-interest law firm based in Ann Arbor, Michigan, filed a lawsuit in federal district court in California, seeking to prevent county officials from removing the cross from the county's official seal.
The lawsuit was brought on behalf of Ernesto Vasquez, a county employee, who objects to the removal of the cross because it sends a government-sponsored message of hostility towards Christians in violation of the United States Constitution.
The specific use of Gibson's donation has not been specified, but it will be used to support the campaign against ACLU's effort to remove the cross from the county seal.

This actually should have gone into the main news forum as it's a very mainstream issue affecting us all.
Dittos.
I am glad to see Mel doing this he should get a medal. I also hope he gives a few bucks to the traditionalist Catholic papers and web sites like Daily Catholic and Catholic Family News and many others. They have certainly supported him when everyone else was kicking him down.
The sad truth of the matter is that Baghdad will have a cross in its seal long after any US city will...
When Nick Berg was killed, and they interviewed one of his neighbors, they truly got more than they bargained for. This fine man looked at the camera and asked: "We keep saying God bless America...why would He, when we keep trying to get Him out of the pledge of allegiance, etc.".
Very well put...
Seemed at the time that Icon was being trampled by reformed Jews; the Holocaust ( Jewish ) cottage industry; and PC Christians who blush at calling a spade a spade.
In fact, the official name of Los Angeles is "The Town of Our Lady the Queen of Angels of the Little Portion." This is unacceptable having Catholic mission cities named in honor of the Blessed Mother or the other holy saints. And why stop there? You've got San Francisco, San Diego, San Bernardino, San Jose, San Luis Obispo, and San Jose?
And why limit yourself to the state of California. There's St. Louis, St. Paul, Santa Fe, San Antonio, the U.S. territories in the Caribbean of St. John, St. Thomas and St. Croix.
All of these saints' names for cities or islands are no longer politically correct. With the support of the Amchurch bishops (perhaps by a vote of 183-6), the ACLU should have no problem renaming them with names like Carter City, Clinton City, Village of Rodham, Kerry and Kennedy Cities, etc.
Once upon a time, in a land far, far away, "reformed Jews" inferred Jewish converts to Catholicism.
Seems Orthodox Jews and Roman Catholics are confronting twin evils.
"Village of Rodham"... LOL!
