Why does someone have to be canonized to be a Saint in the Catholic Church? Doesn't that mean that those who practice faith and are not recognized don't go to heaven?

Canonization is just a formal recognition of the fact that the person, through working miracles done by asking their intercession, is among the chosen in Heaven. Others do go to Heaven, and to pray to God for us, according to Catholic belief.
