Today, at a 10:00 a.m. news conference at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Bishop Boland will announce that Pope John Paul II has appointed a coadjutor bishop-elect for our diocese. He is Msgr. Robert William Finn of the Archdiocese of St. Louis.

Msgr. Finn was born in St. Louis, Missouri, April 2, 1953. He is the second of five children. He studied in the archdiocesan seminaries and at North American College, Rome, where he earned an M.A. in Theology (1979) from the Angelicum University. He was ordained a priest on July 7, 1979.

He was first assigned as associate pastor in two parishes before being appointed to teach at St. Francis Borgia Regional High School (Washington, MO) from 1983 to 1989. During those years he lived in residence and served as part-time associate in an additional two parishes.

In 1989 he received his M.A. in Education Administration from St. Louis University and was appointed Administrator of St. Dominic High School in O'Fallon, Missouri, where he served until 1996. During these years, he also assisted in parishes.

In 1996 he was appointed Director of Continuing Formation of Priests; and in 1999 he was also named editor of The Saint Louis Review, the weekly newspaper of the archdiocese, a position he holds to this day. During these assignments he also lived in residence in parishes.

Father Finn was named a "Chaplain to His Holiness" in August 2003, with the title of Monsignor. He has served in several othe capacities including chair of the Archdiocesan Committee on the Diaconate. He is a Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus.

Msgr. Finn's ordination to the episcopacy will be May 3, 2004, at 2:00 p.m. at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception.

The Review has become much more conservative in the last few years. I'm not sure if this is Finn's influence or not. As a member of this diocese, who is also an employee of the diocese, all I can hope for is to be able to sing, Alleluia! once this coming transition happens.

If I'm not mistaken, he was also very instrumental in the organization of the Eucharistic Congress held here in St Louis a few years ago under the leadership of then Archbishop Rigali.

Wow. Msgr. Finn was supposed to take over as pastor of the Cathedral April 13.

Well, I guess we get a different pastor then.

He was just assigned that position last week or so, I think...I'd have to check the review.

Any ideas who it might be?

No. Finn as pastor of the Cathedral was announced at the pulpit two Sundays ago at the request of Burke. He didn't want the people of the Cathedral to hear third hand that our pastor is going to be a Vicar General and is moving to The Immacolata.
