Is what I find noteworthy is that it is obvious that many Catholics are being comforted by the fact that this is going on in so many other places also.

What is noteworthy is that many non-Catholic Christians have acted as though Catholic priests abuse children at a far higher rate than other clergy, and other people, which is simply not true. People have then used this lie to criticize priestly celibacy, among other things.

Why has the Catholic Church been singled out?

Why not stepfathers?

Why not teachers?

Why not ministers?

Why not rabbis?

Clearly, the reason why the Catholic Church is being singled out for criticism is because She is the largest, most visible Church standing squarely against the agenda of the liberal media.

Dear PNMBC,

"Is what I find noteworthy is that it is obvious that many Catholics are being comforted by the fact that this is going on in so many other places also."

Your statement closes the loop of anti-Catholicism quite well, thank you.

For months and months, we Catholics are bombarded by the anti-Catholic bigots here at FR, and in the wider world, telling us how awful is our Church because of the scandals.

We do what we can to correct the scandals, inviting independent third parties to audit the efforts of nearly 200 dioceses. We have dramatically changed how we go about the life of the Church. Everyone, from bishop, priest, and deacon, down to the fellow who takes care of the basketballs at the K of C-sponsored Free Throw Contests, now is fingerprinted and gets a full background check. Perhaps we've gone a bit overboard, but the effort is to eradicate this awful crime as far as we possibly can.

In the meanwhile, we do research to determine whether, indeed, we are as evil as the anti-Catholics make us out to be. Are we really so much worse than others? If so, what DOES that mean about us?

We discover that, lo and behold, we are not quite as nasty as the bigots say, and in fact, the anti-Catholic bigots usually belong to groups that are even more mired in these sins than our own Church. Virtually every other religious group is more mired in these crimes than is the Catholic Church. Virtually every civil organization or entity which deals at all with children is positively rife with this terrible sin.

This is more true of the honestly atheistic anti-Catholic bigots than of the allegedly Christian anti-Catholic bigots, but true is true.

Splinter. Log. Eye.

Remember that many have said we are a false church, or our teachings are false, or that if we do not "come out of her" we are damned, and the scandals are proof thereof. We merely refute garbage like that with reports like this.

When we then point out this discrepancy between the false charges of the anti-Catholic bigots and what is actually real, then the anti-Catholics close the loop, stating that our defense is somehow invalid or illegitimate because all we are doing is trying to justify or minimize the sins of our own.

Very nice job.
