"Humanist" is not a dirty word. More was not a secular humanist, he was an intensely Christian one (too Christian for many of his contemporaries).

Liberal Democrats don't get their heads chopped off for opposing the power of the state. They subvert the power of the state and use it to terrorize their enemies. If you're looking for someone in More's day who resembled a liberal Democrat, you ought to start with the Bill Clinton of the 16th Century, King Henry VIII -- the very man who signed More's death warrant.

While at Lincoln's Inn, he determined to become a monk and subjected himself to the discipline of the Carthusians, living at a nearby monastery and taking part of the monastic life. The prayer, fasting, and penance habits stayed with him for the rest of his life.

You know any liberal democrats who wear hair shirts to express their sorrow for their sins, and who get up for prayers every day at 3 a.m.? Nope, neither do I.

Humanistic thought was beginning to creep in throughout Europe (became big with QE1). I see nothing here to indicate this was anything other than the humanistic philosophy that spread throughout Europe. And I don't consider the "reconciliation of Christianity with Platonic philosophy" to be that "non-secularist". If that's such a word :O)
