(A) The Papacy and the Magisterium don't rely on sola Scriptura and (B) the Papacy and the Magisterium don't lead to error, so I must confess I don't see your point. Not to speak for AJ But I do think the point is that you claim that Sola Scriptura causes apostasies and cults etc.
AJ's point was that you DO NOT use the Bible as the basis for your faith and yet it can not keep itself together either ..
B) So you believe the selling of indulgents for the dead ..and In advance to your own sin so you could buy your own way into heaven was not an error??...
You need to look at the cafeteria Catholics ..each believing what they choose..

It is hard to escape the fact that
sola Scriptura leads to heresy.
AJ's point was that you DO NOT use the Bible as the basis for your faith and yet it can not keep itself together either ..
That is a sadly mistaken notion, both in and of itself, and for how it misrepresents AJ's comment. Without the Catholic Church you would not even have a Bible.

Oops. Forgot to reply to the 2nd part of your post.

Is the doctrine of indulgences biblically sound? Yes.
Did some within the church abuse this doctrine? Yes.
Is that sufficient cause to reject the Catholic Church?
Before I answer that, let me ask you: Are the actions of Judas sufficient reason to reject the teachings of Jesus?
If not, then I think it is obvious that the sins of clerics is not a sufficient reason to reject the teachings of the Catholic Church.

Are inadequately catechised Catholics a scandal? Absolutely.
Does that in any way refute the doctrines of the Catholic Church? Absolutely not.
