I used to HATE subtitles until I learned to NOT be in charge...
I've never been bothered by subtitles. I understand that they bug a lot of folks,
but I guess that as a "fly-over country" simpleton, I just saw them as a good way
to see good foreign films and understand what was going on. I guess enough folks don't like
them that some foreign film distributors (e.g. French film-makers) say that it
is a major impediment to making money overseas (e.g., in the USA).
But for "The Passion", the initial announcement of a "you are there" narrative
in Aramaic/Latin without subtitles really excited me...hope I can see it that
way on the first viewing!
But I realistically accept that I probably won't get to see it thusly until the
DVD version is released.

The subtitles do not look that big in the trailer. As long as they are big enough to read, but not too big to be distracting, that is fine.
