I often wonder what the heck they think they do believe.

They refuse to believe what the Church proposes for their belief.

They don't believe in their own ideas with enough conviction to walk out and form the institution they say they want.

It seems like a lot of silly posturing with no conviction.

At least Calvin and the rest had the courage to act on their stated beliefs.

Apparently they think the majority of Catholics are simple minded and will follow any whim of doctrine if they just make enough noise. Except they aren't making much noise, they are just talking to each other.

Good point! While reading the question lingered: "these people think they're Catholic, exactly how?" Brought to mind Fulton Sheen's point about war protesters [socialists] who are "against something without being for anything".

I think they are really jealous of the Calvinists and the Reformation players like Luther and the others who 'reformed'. It would be easy for all of them to just leave the Catholic Church. There exist a wide variety of Protestant churches that could fit their beliefs, if they can nail down their beliefs. This is not what they want. What they really seem to want is to start a reformation of their own. Reform all they feel is wrong with the old-fashioned Catholic Church. And save all us sheeple, who, they feel, are too dumb to know what they are missing. Many of us aren't too dumb and don't want the changes they propose, so they reserve insults and slurs for us. But the rest just go along. Weak faith or busy lives or desire to not upset things. Whatever. It's what VOTF counts on. Remember, they are so much more learned and knowledgeable than the rest of us, and if we just don't get that, well... Arms flung into the air. Sound familiar? - it should. This strategy works well for the hillary-style democrats. Tell us what's best for us, expect us to accept it no questions asked, and wail that we just don't (can't) understand if we ask them to explain.
