I think, Steve, the big thing here is that Catholics do not believe that we are bound only by the bible. It is our most sacred document, yes, but there is tradition, also. A lot of our understanding of Mary is based on tradition. Many things have happened since Christ died which are not biblical, but no less true just because they are not in the bible.
Somehow I don't think that the Lord would have a problem with us honoring His mother in the way that He did. She is not worshiped, but venerated. I can't imagine any mother objecting to that.
