Without exception, the authors of the Gospels refuse to exalt themselves. They don't give themselves good press. The Gospel of Matthew doesn't lift up Matthew, it instead reports that Matthew was a sinner, a tax-collector. The Gospel of John doesn't lift up John. It records that John was among the disciples that forsook the Lord when He needed them most. In the Gospels, only one Person gets good press- Messiah. If the Gospels were the work of man, they'd bear the fingerprints of the author. The author would downplay their own faults, and take credit for their works of divine wisdom.
But they don't. They intead downplay themselves and lift up the Lord alone. This is just another sign that the Gospels are from God alone. And your life is also to give an account of the Gospel. Are you seeking to lift yourself up, or the Lord? Are you the Lord's press agent, or your own? You can't be both. So get yourself out of the way, so you can lift up the Lord. Give Him the good press and your life will become a Gospel.
TODAY'S MISSION

I'm not sure I get your meaning. Are you saying that when Jesus was dying on the cross, it was then that He needed His disciples help the most, and John was there trying to help Him. If so, help Him do what?
Or are you saying that, what Jesus wanted more than obedience & faithfulness from His disciples was for them to take care of Mary His mother?

Your author claims that John was among the disciples that "forsook the Lord". Yet there's John at the foot of the cross, along with His mother and two other women. What was he supposed to do? Try to take Jesus down from the cross?

All the disciples forsook the Lord when it really counted. Even though He was completly innocent, none of His disciples stood with Him at His trial. He was found guilty of crimes, that He did not commit, and the disciples didn't say a word in His defense, in fact one of them even denied knowing Him three times. I wouldn't consider standing around watching His execution a sign of true devotion, even the pagans did that.
