This "hapless bench of bishops" does indeed have a lot to answer for. However, the article seems a bit one-sided. I do remember that the USCCB has a pro-life committee and has come out with some fairly strong statements on abortion from time to time, such as the statement on the duties of politicians.

Yes, the bishops will make strong statements in the safety of a commitee but how many will stand alone in the line of fire and speak out against or reprimand a Catholic politician or elected official in their diocese who supports abortion rights.
