It's also true that although the bishops from time to time come out with a prolife statement, they NEVER do so around election time, and they never make it specific: i.e., don't vote for Teddy Kennedy because he's a baby-killer. Like it or not, such a statement would likely lead to the loss of tax-exempt status for the Church.

You are probably right about that specific statement. Couldn't they say the same thing without the name?

Like it or not, such a statement would likely lead to the loss of tax-exempt status for the Church. Probably. But the bishops could excommunicate pro-abortion politicians. And if that resulted in the loss of their tax-exempt status, too bad.

Funny how the loss of tax exempt status never seems to bother "Reverend" Jackson or "Reverend" Sharpton.

Like it or not, such a statement would likely lead to the loss of tax-exempt status for the Church. Possibly so. But at some point, somebody has to come out in the open and challenge the view that it's OK for any black minister in the country to say "Vote for clinton," and it's OK for clinton or gore to appear in black pulpits on election day, but it's impermissible for Catholics to do the same.
I agree that risking loss of tax-exempt status would be a major tragedy, but it plays both ways. There would be an enormous firestorm if the Catholic Church were singled out in that way. There would be practical consequences, such as hospital closings. And it would be much harder for Democrats to split the Catholic vote as they do now.
