A heterosexual who pushed and flaunted his/her sex life would not be tolerated in America. For some sick reason in America they become Icons.

This is absolutely consistent with what I heard from a friend at church. (I checked this story out and now am sure of the source.) She knows an Episcopalian from the "bishop's" home diocese who has sat with him on several committees over a period of many years. This person reports that "it is all about Gene, nothing but Gene, and it has always been only about Gene." Apparently his narcissism and self-absorption is limitless. Not only does he not care about the effect of his consecration upon the church nationally and internationally -- he doesn't even really comprehend it. It's not even on his radar screen. I've known people like this personally, and to them the self is the only thing that's real -- the rest of the world is important only as it affects them. It's really a psychopathology.

Great sort of fellow to be giving the bishop's hat to, eh?
