PANAJI: Musicians and singers from across India on Friday performed in Goa for the slain American journalist Daniel Pearl to mark what would have been his 40th birthday.

Pearl, a Wall Street Journal reporter, was kidnapped and murdered by terrorists in Pakistan in February last year while investigating links between the al Qaeda network, blamed for the Sept. 11 attacks and suspected shoe-bomber Richard Reid.

Artists performed to an enthralled audience as they lit candles and sang songs urging for world peace.

Ace fashion designer Wendell Rodricks said the occasion was one to learn the value of peace.

"My presence here is to support the cause of peace as well as to preserve the peace and tranquility of our state. I think it's very important at this stage and this point in time because Goa is being invaded by a lot of problems and I hope the peace is not destroyed," Rodricks said. Though a journalist, Pearl was a music lover and even played the violin and the mandolin perfectly.

Close friends say while working in locations around the world throughout his career, Pearl joined various bands and a music concert is the best way to pay him tributes.

Pearl was born in Princeton, New Jersey, and grew up in California. He was 38 when he was murdered.

His killing, which The Wall Street Journal called "an act of barbarism," brought condemnation around the world. A grisly videotape showing his death was delivered to the U.S. consulate in Karachi.

Four men, including a British-born Islamic militant commonly known as Sheikh Omar, have been convicted and one of them has been sentenced to death in Pakistan in connection with his killing.

Killed by 'our allies, the ones we've sent $3billion plus in tax dollars to' more commonly known as blood-thirsty Pack maniacs. Beats me why we never say a word against the slamofascist regime in Pack which HAS WMD: nukes, chem biological warfare you name it, and from where we seem to get an ever increasing stream of terrorirsts.
