Because it can provide up to four times the pain relief of non-opioid analgesics.

Because it works, and works very well.

Are you suggesting that they not prescribe it because people misuse it?

Because it's very effective at controlling acute pain. The problem isn't with the drug itself but rather the way most of these addicts are using the drug. Used properly, drugs like OxyContin, Percocet and the rest are perfectly safe. But some folks start chewing the pills or grinding them up to get a jolt of heroin like buzz and that's were their problems start. Once they get hooked on the buzz, they're done.

Because people cannot live with terrible pain.

Now THAT is the question... and unfortunately will never be investigated. There are surely many doctors who have given this stuff out recognizing that the patient may have had a problem.

Doctors in the NY area have largely stopped prescribing OC for patients, except in the most extreme cases.

Now , no doctor will presribe this stuff for fear of a lawsuit or criminal inquiry. And maybe that is for the best.

YOU obviously don't live with severe and chronic pain.

I can't tolerate any of the codeine family. It's probably good for me that I can't, because I would surely be taking all the oxycontin I could get my hands on by now. I am under no illusion that I am stronger than my pain is. Nor do I believe that the pain is as bad as it could get--I have seen cancer patients suffering worse, and childbirth gave me a definite clue as well.

I suffer daily and constant pain that is obviously beyond the imagination of some people. If I found a drug that made it feel better, I don't think anything could stop me. That's just fact.

Like most "traditional" doctors - they don't care. Teh drug rep tells em - hey a great pain relieving drug" and the doctor takes the sample, gives them out, hears they "work" and starts prescribing. Of course some automatically prescribe. Traditional doctors are in bed with pharm companies. LOOK at WHO does the research - pharm companies ... look at WHO subsidizes medical school and provides stuff to students - PHARM companies. Each is addicted to the other for $$$.

Because this and other derivatives of opium relieve strong or sometimes terrible pain. Opium and poppies extracts were used for thousand of years and the world did not end because of that.

But neo-puritans prefer their fellow human beings rather to suffer the torture of pain than risking someone can derive a forbidden pleasure from a drug. Same with marijuana - neo-puritans rather will see millions of people in jail and businesses ruined than letting people get high or smoke tobacco. If it were up to the neo-puritans would Prohibition would be still there.

For pain. Because it works.

I remember having a toothache at work this year.
A lady I work with told me she had something that would help.
I couldn't believe it when she pulled Oxycontin out of her purse.
She called them her "happy pills". LOL

I had Kidney stones and a lot pain after the operation. This stuff was an amazing painkiller. Very Good when used properly.

Not good if you have an addictative personality however.

I threw away about 10 that were left over from my perscription. Guess I could have sold them ;=)

A lot of rationalization from the WOD crowd. Rush is lucky though he won't go to jail like a poor kid would. I do hope he is able to learn to control his addiction.
