Gray Davis Only Gave Californians What They Wanted — Arnold Will Do The Same!
TooGood Reports ^ | 12 October 2003 | Perry Drake

Here's another installment of Passing Thoughts, Disjointed Notions, Silly Observances and All-around General Nonsense. Some are topical, some not.

• Cut Gov. Gray Davis some slack. He only gave Californians what they demanded, which was everything their hearts desired without having to pay for it.

• It's a lock that Gov.-elect Arnold Schwarzenegger will raise taxes despite his pledges to the contrary.

• Democrats serve up the same old goose; Republicans merely change the sauce.

• The real problem in our nation is the loss of the concept of limited government. Until that is once more our guiding principle, all else is futile.

• The reason most people have a difficult time adhering to their principles is that doing so forces them to compromise the exercising of their passions.

• There is only one basis for a free society -- a man's right to live for himself. All else is transitory and always leads to serfdom.

• Evil is evil regardless of the intentions behind it. Is it any comfort to a man to know that his life, liberty and pursuit of happiness have been taken away from him for his own good?

• Why praise politicians for speeches they give when in most cases they are merely reciting words crafted by someone else? It would be more accurate to praise them for their reading abilities.

• The major flaw with public property is that when everybody owns something, nobody owns it. That's why public restrooms are usually too filthy to use.

• Even the most committed atheist believes that in death he'll get an answer to why he existed in the first place.

• Tell the truth. Most of you who have been listening to the Rush Limbaugh show during the past week are dying to hear him discuss the drug allegations against him. Me too, but whether he guilty or not, I'm still going to be a big fan. Dittos, Rush.

• When are they going to make a movie about the Big Bopper?

• A definition for historic: Old and expensive to upkeep.

• I saw Teddy Kennedy on television the other day and a frightening thought occurred to me. As long-lived as his mother Rose was, there's a distinct possibility that we could be stuck with Teddy for another 25 years or so.

• Using dishwashing liquid in a dishwashing machine is a mistake you only make once.

• If you can't occasionally fake having a good time, don't get married.

• Pro-lifers and pro-choicers argue a great deal as to whether life begins at conception or birth. I say it begins when your rich uncle dies and leaves you a million dollars.

• Malaysia always sounds more as if it should be the name of an intestinal disorder and not a nation in Southeast Asia.

• Time moves so fast that sometimes it places us far behind the awareness of its effect on our bodies. I think that every time I see some out-of-shape woman who still thinks she looks sexy wearing spandex.

• Gravity is eventually going to claim us all.

Too many people expect to be taken care of by the government (we must provide everything for the people - where have I heard that recently?), and for someone else to protect them (use your cell phone, call 911), and to blame "society" for their problems (trial lawyers). I don't see things getting better any time soon. My husband tells me that I'm pessimistic, but I don't think so. I just lost my rose-colored glasses several years ago, and never replaced them.

I don't remember demanding crushing tax rates, illegal alien driver licenses, and business run out of the state on a rail.

Alabama's RINO governor Bob Riley had some advice for Arnold and I quote, "Whatever you do don't listen to me!"

I don't remember any of us voting for that stuff... for the record I never voted for Gray Davis back in 1998.

Exactly. Bob Riley was in a heap of trouble cause he thought he people were thrilled with having their taxes raised. It took a thrashing at the polls for him to find out he was like so wrong! Let's hope Arnold gets it.

Doofus Riley has yet to say he was wrong. Think I'll run against him in 2006.

Thats because these are the final outcome, the logical consequence, of getting all the things we want for free.

First comes the free stuff, then comes the bills.

Here's a more accurate description why. It comes from Steven Hayward in Reason Magazine, 1997 who discussed Willie Brown. Though Brown invented it and is no longer Speaker it continues today and will continue tomorrow. To wit,

"the lobbying community became known as the "third house," since lobbyists were a de facto branch of the legislature. The biggest statist interests--the trial lawyers, the teachers union, and other labor groups--enjoyed a stranglehold on the legislature. Membership on "juice" committees--banking, insurance, natural resources--was highly coveted because these committees allowed you to generate more campaign cash."

We did not call Dufus the coin operated governor for no reason. To be fair, the Democrats in the legislature do not particularly like Dufus but all shared the wealth.

As far as Gov. Schwarzenegger raising taxes the talk in Sacramento is he will urge the Democrat-controlled legislature to offer the voters an initiative next March that would authorize a one-time-only borrowing of some $20 billion to cover operating shortfalls. In return the voters will get the assurance that never again..hmmm.
