The average guy, won't be able to get another prescription for abusable drugs again if they admit they are an addict. And for good reason.
The elite, of course, are different.

Wow..I feel incredibly sad for Rush, he was obviously in a lot of pain from back surgury in the late 90's. May all our prayers be with him and rejoice the day he gets back behind the EIB microphone!

He admitted he's addicted to painkillers. I could have been an addict myself if I hadn't had small children.
The allegations of illegally buying the drugs: probably true.
He asks for our prayers. This man has been there for us for over a decade, and I for one will be there for him. I'm adding him to my prayers. Let's not let the left morally relativize this.

We should remember that sometimes people are on very long term use of pain killers for chronic, intractable, pain. Some of the drugs used include morphine, percodan, oxycontin, demerol, etc.
Sure, there is a danger of addiction. However, if they do not take the pain killer, they pain will eventually kill them. Furthermore, in this case, the patients are able to live productive lives.
This is in contrast to the recreational drug addict, some of them are using the drugs as an escape.

First thing a lawyer tells you to do is get thee to rehab.

I speak from experience that medicaiton is sometimes the only alternative when dealing with chronic neck and back pain.
There's a difference when someone is taking the medication to get high and when they are taking it to relieve pain so that they can perform normal daily tasks, e.g., sitting, standing, walking, etc.
I thank God that my pain management doctor never precribed the more addicitive medications such as oxycontin, etc. However, I would be the first to say that without a medication regime, I would be miserable from the chronic pain, as I was before.
And don't give me the crap about chiropracters, etc. I've been to them and they have done a wonderful job. Likewise, exercise, diet, attending Church, prayers, all are good, but they too have limits. When a disk is pressing on nerve, and it''s not operable for all practical purposes, you simply are faced with the choice of living with the pain or trying to treat it so that you can reasonably function through the day.
The real failure was that of Rush's doctors for not providing him less addictive alternatives.
He will certainly be in my prayers.

So good, Skooz. And I join you. He's like a dear member of my family and I will miss him. My prayers will be with him as well as Marta.

Actually, whether he obtained the painkillers legally or illegally is an open question; he didn't seem to adress it but for the comments that the media had destorted details.

Oh crap. Here we go. The thread is doomed.

Not any dislike for Rush, but dislike for drugs and addiction. And it's just reality that drug rehab isn't some cureall.

I thought Kerry's joke was pretty funny. If somebody said it about Tipper Gore or Cindy McCain, everybody here would have been cracking up.
Whether or not it was "presidential" is another story.

I am worried about the hearing loss issue here also. One would assume the connection now right, or at least the possibility. Do painkillers help people lose weight too?

John Kerry is going to look like a fool for his comments last night. What did the idiot say, basically? I've been away from the computer and need to get caught up.

Yep, I only take Naproxin Sodium (Alleve) only when I REALLY am in pain. I was told that surgery would probably not help me, but I had to stop playing lacrosse, which was more painful than my back.

True.
