WASHINGTON -- Former California Attorney General Dan Lungren has filed papers with the Federal Election Commission declaring himself to be a candidate for the Republican nomination to succeed Rep. Doug Ose. Lungren said in an interview this week that he expects to formally announce his candidacy for the 3rd Congressional District seat at a Sacramento-area press conference in two weeks. He will face state Sen. Rico Oller of San Andreas in the March primary.
Lungren served a decade in the House representing the San Diego area before being elected twice as the state's top lawyer. He took a hiatus from politics after the 1998 gubernatorial election, when he was the Republican nominee who lost to Gov. Gray Davis. Lungren campaigned for Gov.-elect Arnold Schwarzenegger in the actor's successful bid in Tuesday's recall election.
