Excerpts from Schwarzenegger press conference as governor-elect (DefactoAmnesty? On Day 1?)
SF Gate ^ | Oct 8, 2003 | AP

"There's a bill that Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) has introduced that I think is terrific. It gives temporary working permits to immigrants so they can come in and out of this country, out of this state, and also, you know, there's another idea. Undocumented immigrants who come here before August 2003 can apply for visas especially if they don't have a criminal background. And if they have a job right now, they can apply for that visa. So there are different programs I want to push in that direction to help undocumented immigrants."

And you thought Rioden talking about taxes and naming marxist Willie Brown to his staff was bad in the first couple days....

He announced these plans prior to the election. This isn't a post-election surprise.

Sound like a good idea to me. We know they're in the fields already so let INS go after the real problems (ok wishful thinking on that last part).

Applying for a visa is not the same thing as getting citizenship. It's another way to document workers properly - and it gives law enforcement more leverage in expelling illegal aliens who don't have visas. The thinking is, if you don't have a criminal record, or if you have a job, you have a visa. If you don't have a visa, you must be unemployed or a criminal...

If he wants to establish a legacy he couldn't pick a better way than to normalize 4 million illegals.

Californians will think of him every time they pull up to a Home Depot.

He gave us plenty of warning on this, BTW.

Really? First I heard of it. His pandering prior to the election hardly makes this out of character, but going along with fellow "Republican" McCain's plan is a newsflash to me.

Who needs driver's licenses when you got this open guest worker BS.

Sounds like some good ideas to me. I'd rather have some way to document these people than having them coming and going illegally. They are there because of the demand for their services.

And just how would we know if they had a history of criminal behavior. Huh?

This isn't a post-election surprise.

For whatever consolation we can get out of it, we can at least say we told them so.

No, but legalization is a necessary first step. Who really doubts citizenship will eventually be next?

No suprise here. Arnold said this stuff before the election, too. He's pro-immigrant, illegal or not. If anyone is surprised at this, they weren't listening.

This is just the beginning. Arnold is going to sound more and more like a Democrat as the weeks go by.

Pro-life, pro-gun control, pro-gay, pro-immigration. And that's just the start. He wants more money for schools, more money for medical care, more money for this and that.

Democrat.

EXACTLY - a visa is not even a green card -

Currently, the requirements for Mexican citizens are as follows:

First, the prospective employer must file a labor condition application;
Then, the applicant's prospective employer must file an I-129 "Petition For Non-Immigrant Workers" with the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS); and
After the petition has been approved, the alien must apply for a non-immigrant visa at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate in Mexico.
