Chief of staff to Benjamin Netanyahu: I'm an "Admirer" of Hitler, Too

9 OCTOBER 2003

I'm an "Admirer" of Hitler, Too -- And Any Politico Who Isn't Damn Well Ought To Be

The name “Adolph Hitler” sends a chill down the spine of any sane, rational human being with an even cursory knowledge of history. The very name means EVIL. For me, the son of an Auschwitz survivor and former advisor to the Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, hearing the name Adolph Hitler triggers many deep-rooted emotions.

As the son of a father who spent a year of his youth as a prisoner in the Auschwitz concentration camp, Hitler’s name means the near eradication of my family and the murder of 6 million of my people.

As an advisor to the leader of Israel (and the ostensible leader of the Jewish people), Adolph Hitler’s name, to me, is a warning beacon … a clear symbol to the world that tyranny and evil can rise up in even the most progressive and cultural of societies. His name is a vivid reminder to all those who support and defend the State of Israel that the country’s mere existence ensures that “never again” will genocide befall the Jewish people.

So of course last week when it was reported that Arnold Schwarzenegger, the Austrian-born Republican Governor-elect of California, purportedly said earlier in his life that he “admired Hitler," the chills went careening down my spine. Could it be possible that the Governor of the largest state in the Union, a state whose economy eclipses that of most countries, was a “Nazi sympathizer”? Let’s face it, that’s the implication when someone is reported to be an admirer of Adolph Hitler. It’s only natural, how can someone “admire” an individual like Hitler and NOT be a Nazi sympathizer? At least that’s what I believe the motivation for this story coming out less than a week before the recall election was aimed at doing.

But before I get to the political implications I want to let everyone in on a dirty little secret: I look at Adolph Hitler with awe and amazement. Yes, the son of an Auschwitz survivor and an individual who works day and night to strengthen the State of Israel and support the Jewish people is in awe of Adolph Hitler.

GEORGE BIRNBAUM

George Birnbaum was a strategic advisor and chief of staff to Benjamin Netanyahu, the former Prime Minister of Israel. Before working for Mr. Netanyahu, he worked on over 30 U.S. House and Senate races, providing polling, research and media production services. And though it is said that politics ain't rocket science, in Birnbaum's case it is -- before entering the world of political consulting, Mr. Birnbaum studied to be an astronaut and received his B.S. in Astrophysics.

Admin: Could you change the title from "Chief of staff to Benjamin Netanyahu: I'm an 'Admirer' of Hitler, Too" to "Chief of staff for Benjamin Netanyahu: I'm an 'Admirer' of Hitler, Too" -- for clarity purposes. Thanks.

Certainly Hitler was brillant and to deny that
is to ignore history.

The distrubing thing about what Arnold actually
said was not that expressed a belief in Nazism
but the way he expressed admiration for the
way Hitler controlled the masses and got
the do whatever he said.

I do not think Hitler's abuse of his talents
and use of them to cast a demonic spell over
people should be admired.

A leader should a servant not demi-god.
The very act of any leader seeking to turn
his following into a personality cult
is an evil thing in and of itself.

Reminds me of what the media did to Marge Schott here in Cincinnasty when she said that she had a Nazi armband.

I'd pay lots of $$$ for an authentic WWII Nazi armband or other war memorabilia.

It's called HISTORY!

What part of the comment about English being Arnold'ssecond language did you not get. My German is often less than exact.

Yea it pretty neat to have one, just cause of the significance; being a war that changed teh face of the earth, although what it stood for causes me to have the utmost grotesque resentment for the Nazis. Too bad you have to be 'plitically correct' now-a-days though. I wonder how much the bidding price would be on one of those arm bands?

He said he admired Hitler, because of how he rose from 'rags to riches' basically, and was such a great speaker in public; to the people. Though after that he remarked that he did not agree with how Hitler used his power and persuasiveness. Though the whole excurpt taken about what he said was misread, due to like someone else stated before; English is his second language. The author of the book whih Arnold made the comment in even said himself that he could not believe that he misquoted Arnold on what he said.

That's what I thought. I didn't understand his quotes to mean he admired Hitler per se as the other posters comments seemed to insinuate.

It's a misplaced awe: there is little amazing about Hitler.

What is amazing, elusive, and mysterious is the crowd behavior that makes people like Hitler to gain prominence. Great many books are written about him and some about the relevant politics but very few about the average Joe… excuse me, Hans, that made Hitler what he was.
