Slavery was legal in Brazil until 1888. Psuedo-slavery in the form of indentured servitude continues to this day.

I saw a show on the History Channel about this. Brazil had 1,000,000 African slave during our Civil War. Less than America had, but still I haven't ever heard one peep out of the reparations crowd about Brazil and othe non US contries having to make amends like they want us to do.
The slaves in Brazil were too expensive, so the Confederados either brought their own with them or worked the land themselves. The soil wasn't as fertile as the Southern US. That's why many returned home.
