Plenty of theories have been floated to explain Attorney General Richard Ieyoub's failure to make the Nov. 15 runoff for governor. Most commentators have pointed to low voter turnout and a well-financed challenge by former Congressman and fellow Democrat Claude "Buddy" Leach of Lake Charles.

I agree with Representative Tauzin. The RNC should keep a low profile in the LA gubernatorial general election, considering the turn of events that led to the reelection of Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-LA, on Dec. 7, 2002.

I have no respect whatsoever for Sharpton, but any police
officer who says he can't tell the difference between
a cell phone and a pistol is either an utter incompetent
or a liar.

The Shreveport Police handled the shooting correctly.

As to "can't tell the difference between a pistol and a cell phone," I own a black pistol and a black cell phone of similar size. If I were to pull either one out of my jacket at a policeman, there's no way he could or would be able to tell which one it was until it was too late.

Moral of the story: don't have or put things in your hand when confronting the police. So many policemen have been shot that they aren't going to take any chances - and they shouldn't. When confronted by the police, if you have something in your hand, drop it and keep your hands in plain sight. If you don't have anything in your hand, keep it that way: don't reach for anything. And if you are stopped in your car, make sure that you keep your hands where the cop outside the car can see them clearly at all times.

This is just common sense.

P.S. Shreveport has some pretty rough minority neighborhoods. I stopped at a convenience store on a major road there a couple of years back and looked down the side street, and it looked a lot like Watts. I wouldn't want to be a cop there.

Absolute Bu!!$#|t!!!

I am very familiar with many types of handguns -- and I viewed the police videotape several times -- frame-by-frame. It was at night, and the way the perp held that phone extending out in front of his hands, (in a combat shooting grip) it was indistingushable from the frame/slide/muzzle end of a semiautomatic pistol.

Had I been in a threatened position -- as those officers were -- I wouldn't have stopped shooting until the perp was inert and the threat was neutralized. Then I would have become very angry at the idiot for subjecting me to post-shooting remorse by forcing me to shoot him.
