Hi Carlo -
I believe that Schwarzenegger's election as governor of California tells us that fiscally conservative/socially liberal isn't an oxymoron, and can win.
To be perfectly blunt, "socially liberal" means only a few things that some conservatives hate worse than poison:
1) The belief that, while abortion should not be a constitutional right, early/first trimester abortions should not be outlawed.
2) The belief that, while homosexuals should not have special rights, homosexual behavior between consenting adults should not be illegal.
3) The belief that, while not all so-called "recreational drugs" should be available without a physician's supervision for serious medical conditions, only, personal use of marijuana should be, at worst, decriminalized, and perhaps even legalized.
In other words, something kinda like libertarianism only far more mainstream.
I used to be a member of the Libertarian party, but the Libertarians I knew seriously argued crazy stuff: that the Second Amendment should apply to personal nuclear weapons; that all drugs, even cyanide, should be legalized; and that even the strange little creatures in the bottom of the ocean should be someone's private property!
So, I became a Republican.
However, here on Free Republic I've met Republicans who seriously argue that only Christians and Jews can be Republicans, not atheists and no other religion; that if you believe in evolution you can't be a Republican; that gay people can't be Republicans (in fact, should be burned at the stake or stoned to death) and so on and so forth. They'd rather see a Democrat elected than what they call a RINO.
Well, phooey on them. It's my party, and I won't let them decide who is and isn't a Republican. I'm in the main stream, and I won't be marginalized.

"I'm in the main stream, and I won't be marginalized."
You will when the mainstream drifts back over closer to the center again.

My only comment is that I can't believe Christians can be democrats! But, some are.

Wasn't aware that cyanide had been made illegal - but it shouldn't surprise me. Potassium cyanide used to be a staple in an analytic chemistry lab, and was available to the general public as well by mail order. While mystery writers were fond of it, I don't recall any particular problems caused by cyanide.
