Arnold Schwarznegger has self-identified as 'pro-choice.' But in supporting parental notification and opposing partial-birth abortions, he has taken a significant break from the monolithic abortion lobby. This has made him public enemy #1 at NOW and NARAL and CARAL. There are quite a few pro-life legislators that have rallied to Arnie's side. They are in a position to advise and influence him. He has said he wants that advice. He has appointed pro-lifers to his transition team. Perhaps most significantly, unlike the unpleasant tenor of the Wilson years, Arnie has said he doesn't want to create the internal Republican wars over abortion. He does not want to make war on the party platform. These are significant distinctions. Arnie's victory is a victory for those who want to move us away from the pro-abortion mentality ardently pursued during the previous six years.

Looks like others are seeing that incremental victories can and do save some lives, and move us closer to saving far more.

Well, I hope that you are right about Arnold because as it stands now we have a Catholic heretic in the Governor's Mansion in Kalifornia. If he does move away from his "pro choice" stance I will be surprised. If the Nazis had put up a somewhat less anti-jewish Furer I don't think we would have cheered the outcome any more that we did Hitler's Germany. Murder continues to be the mode of operation in the USA. Eugenics is the culture that we have inherited from the "Captains of Industry" in the early 1900's. And it's not about to go away because it is all about money.

Thank you for the post. I am glad that Arnold is right of Davis on the pro-life issue.

A close relative lives around Santa Barbra. She has been a big factor in NOW for a LONG time out there. The day Arnold announced his run, I talked to her and jested about it, thinking at the time he wouldn't end up where he is. But she was adamant, militant about her dislike for him. She said she would rather have a "nutcase" like Tom McClintock in there, than to have Arnold, and it wasn't because of political experience, it was due to Arnold being firm and disliked by NOW and groups like them. She also ranted about how the whole recall was a payback by the GOP for the 2000 election :)
I think people are going to be surprised by Arnolds ability to govern.

I opposed Arnold because he declared himself pro-choice. But you have to deal with the facts, namely that he is now, or soon will be, governor.

Notice that Californiaprolife.org and California Planned Parenthood both came out with statements today praising Arnold for favoring their causes. They can't both be right, but obviously each is hoping he will lean their way.

I'm inclined to hope that Arnold will take a moderate position on life issues and refrain from making statements that might split the party. It's certainly true that he's miles better than Davis on these issues. Davis was thinking up new pro-abort or pro-death issues almost every day. Arnold should be better than that.

As long as he is to the right of the current climate in CA abortion politics, that's great. I hope he can make changes in the public funding of abortions and preventive education.

Although McClintock said he was pro-life, he really only emphasized that he opposed partial-birth abortion. I suspect that it was because either that is the only type of abortion that could be made legal/illegal in the short term future or because he believes in incremental change, besides the fact that he concentrated on fiscal/economic issues. Also, the abortion lobby would probably go after him if he said anything else.

In words that I heard or news articles I saw on FR during the campaign, McClintock and Schwarzenegger did not say much different about specific aspects of abortion other than the general terms life/choice. Both of them are raising children, too, unlike Davis who never had or adopted any children.

A significant break. What a joke.

Aside from his oppositin to PBA, Arnold still supports 99.98% of all abortions carried out annually in the US. This isn't even an incremental victory.

CP, you are normally so solidly pro-life that I am stunned and disappointed that you would post such spin. I am generally not a purist on my political support but I do insist that they be on the right side. Do you really believe that someone who admits to not just to being "pro-choice" but specifically "pro-abortion" will put forth any effort to save the lives of the unborn? Arnold may be a republican, but what do you expect his administration to do to further the cause of life? The main effect of his election on the issue was to set a precedent of how many RINO voters will support RINO politicians with complete disregard for the national party's pro-life plank.

Bump for a good article.

"Parental Notification" is an important step in the right direction.

Arnold's position is no doubt influenced by the fact he has two daughters, whereas Davis was a father to no one.

As one who is solidly, and completely PRO-LIFE, I say that any enemy of NOW and NARAL, is a friend of mine.

California's PRO-LIFE supporters SHOULD be celebrating the recall of an enemy of LIFE.

Parental notification and a partial birth abortion ban are huge issues, and can't be considered inconsequential because they are only 'incremental.'

Whitman said she was against partial birth abortion
too. I bet there will never be a parential notification
bill whose wording he will support.

And as for partial birth abortion it would be the
same except congress is banning it now so that is
a mute issue.

The "Republicans for Choice PAC" love Arniold and plan to use him to further their cause within the party.

It makes me sick to see prolife leaders help lift him to hero status in the Republican party.
