It's pretty impressive! I live in Gainesville, FL (a pretty unimportant place, although don't tell that to UF and the Gators) and every so often I'll hear an incredible roar and look up to see F-16s clearing the skies because the President is on his way back from some visit to Florida.
It definitely wakes you up!

Seriously, I'd guess that some above posts were correct - game, etc.
As long as they are in formation, no problem.
As opposed to see them split up in pairs and go different directions, at speed. That would be "engage" time. Usually not a good sign. Could be just an exercise, though.
I spent a career in the AF, been retired for close to 10 years....and I still stop and watch when I see 'em. Pissed me off that my current job took me so far from the base.
