Dick Riordan was just interviewed live on Fox Newschannel and told Fox reporter Brian Wilson that Arnold needs to add new taxes to help balance the budget in California. He said Arnold also needs to tax internet sales.

An Arnold victory in California is no more threatening to the GOP than a Guliani victory was in New York City.

Both are liberal. And both will be run by liberals. Why not have a sitting Republican governor help Bush get elected in 2004 than a Democratic governor help Dean/Kerry/etc.?

Riordan needs a subtle reminder of his status in the CA GOP and of Arnold's. Like comparing each man's biceps, it isn't very hard to tell who has the bigger set of guns.

Great point! And you are correct, most POLs don't realize it yet. The voters of today are FAR less likely to vote the party line and will research their own opinions and vote accordingly.

It is the rise of the independant vote. I predict that it will become more so in the future.

No no no! 1998 levels are the same as they are now: 2%. We want the rates rolled back to 2/3%, as they have been from 1/1/1999 to 9/30/2003, until McClintock's VLF repeal initiative can go into effect (assuming it collects enough signatures and then is passed next November).

Online retailers in CA already collect tax from us. That's why big retailers like Amazon.com are based elsewhere -- the 7.25% margin often makes a difference, and CA is a huge market.

Maybe if internet sales taxes were eliminated, we might encourage online businesses to establish or stay in CA. The loss in revenue would be compensated by the increased economic activity and the increased circulation of money that would generate taxes.

Here's the most likely scenario. Arnold handlers push the legislature to have California become a party to the agreement linked above, so that the state can begin taxing sales made to California buyers from out of state sellers. Arnold's spokesmen will then assert that it isn't a tax on Californians but that it is instead a tax on the out of state sellers, ignoring the fact that retailers will simply add the tax to the price paid by the California buyer.

They will be able to raise taxes while claiming not to. They'll lie with the milk still on their lips.
