No one wants the Cubs or Red Sox to win. It would ruin the enjoyment. Bucky F'in Dent and The Curse of THe Bambino are as American as Apple Pie.

Either team losing in a spectacularly nailbiting fashion would please me immensely. Let the selfpity continue.

You're right. Besides, I know of no self-pitying Cubs fans who wallow in their misery. Cubs fans are proud of their team and expect nothing in return for their fervent support of the North Siders. I'm sure you can say the same of BoSox fans.

I absolutely revel in the wonderfulness of the Curse of the Bambino. The more the baseball gods jerk the Red Sox fans around and play with their minds, the more I enjoy the delicious moment when they yank it all away from them.
I only wish the stupid Red Sox could have counter-cursed the stupid Yankees in retaliation.
The Red Sox just don't have the mojo, I suppose.

While a Cubs victory might assuage the "long-suffering" Chicago Cubs fans, it wouldn't do much for the long-suffering Chicago White Sox or Chicago Blackhawks fans.
The Blackhawks last won the Stanley Cup in '60-61, 42 years ago. The NY Rangers storied Cup drought was 53 years, so the Blackhawks have a way to go yet, but they're getting there.
The White Sox last played in a World Series in 1959 (look how many times the Red Sox have been in the WS since then), and last won it in 1906!
And people say the Red Sox are jinxed...

But I've always suspected that Boston and Chicago rooters enjoy their long losing streaks on some level. This is a preposterous supposition. I've been great friends with fans from both Chicago and Boston for a long time. The local sportswriters enjoy the long streaks on many levels, because it's an easy go-to when writer's block hits.
The 12 year old Cub fan does not know heartache. He's pulling for his team. The 80 year old doesn't revel in his misery. He wants them to win the damned thing.

If the Yankees don't win the one thing that would take the edge off a bit for me would to see the Red Sox blow the Series in some new and spectacularly heatbreaking fashion. Cowboy up.

I know what this guy is talking about. It's kinda fun to be a fan of the Cubs since they haven't won in 95 years. We're getting a lot of attention. We'll trade our uniqueness for a World Series win though.

The World Series will be Yankees vs Cubs. Winner: Yankees in 6 or 7.

How very wrong you are.
I've been amazed the past couple of weeks at the selfish attitude of many baseball fans. I've seen a lot of bashing of the Cubs and their fans. Why? Because one of their everyday fallbacks to make themselves feel better is going by the wayside. They can no longer say "it could be worse, we could be Cub fans".
We Cub fans are a strange lot. We have something that is sorely lacking in the world today... loyality. Cub fans are the most loyal on earth. We love the Cubs, not because they are the best, not because they are trendy, not because it makes us look smart. We love them because they are the Cubs. We love them because they play in the most beautiful ball park in the world. We love them because, despite the years of losing and frustration, they never give up. They are like you and me, the common man, the simple man, the average Joe around the corner.
I ask you, what is more "American as Apple Pie" than a common, average guy finding success after years of frustration? What is more "American as Apple Pie" than an underdog becoming a champion? What is more "American as Apple Pie" than someone trying to remain as close to the purity of their convictions against huge odds, and then finding themselves on the cusp of greatness?
THAT is why we love the Cubs, and there's millions of us out here.

I just heard Dusty Baker on the radio and he said that although Game 1 is important, it is not "pivotable" like in a five-game series. Maybe Daley's rubbing off on him.
To: .cnI redruM
As a die hard fan of the Red Sox the author does have a point. All this nonsense about the curse and self pitying one hears on Sports Talk Radio is really annoying and it feeds into a really obnoxious negative fan attiude that I think has effected the team.
Look what happened to Buckner? That guy was a GREAT player and played well for the Red Sox. He won't even come back to Boston to this day because of how he was treated by the fans. And he didn't even lose that series- there was a seventh game! It is just tough to be a major league ball player in Boston where every public statement you make is endlessly criticised by over sensitive fans. Patino- when coach of the Celtics had a famous quote about Talk Radio Boston callers that says it best but I won't post here.
GO SOX.
