October 7, 2003 -- The father of a suspect in the Long Island hazing scandal was found dead at his home over the weekend - the victim of the stress caused by his son's impending arrest, the family lawyer said yesterday. The 40-year-old North Merrick man's death delayed his son's surrender.
The Mepham HS student had been scheduled to turn himself in to Pennsylvania authorities today on charges of sodomy, kidnapping and assault in connection with the alleged sex-assault hazing at a Pennsylvania camp over the summer.
Wayne County, Pa., District Attorney Mark Zimmer said yesterday he was seeking to have the teen and two other members of the Mepham football team charged as adults, which means they could face decades in prison if convicted.
Three junior-varsity teammates were allegedly sodomized with broomsticks, pine cones and golf balls by the three older players, prosecutors said.
Zimmer yesterday called the crimes "horrific."
"This was not one isolated incident at the camp," he said. "Rather, it was a pattern of activity that took place over a period of days, involving multiple victims."
Zimmer said the victims, ages 13 and 14, have "expressed fear of going out in public, feeling . . . humiliated and as if they are the ones being punished. Not one of [the others] stood up and said, 'No more. This is wrong.' "
He said the suspects, ages 15, 16, and 17, "acted as a team. They will be treated as a team."
In a joint statement, lawyers for the three victims said the teens and their families welcomed Zimmer's efforts to charge the suspects as adults.
Lawyers Robert Kelly and David Woycik also called on school officials "to shoulder their responsibility in this matter.
"The principal and coaches who had an opportunity to prevent this attack should acknowledge their responsibility," they said.
Nassau police said yesterday the team member's father who was found dead Sunday apparently died of natural causes.
The county medical examiner said that, while the death doesn't look suspicious, toxicology tests will be performed.
Mark Alter, lawyer for the teen whose father died, said he had spoken to the distraught dad on Saturday night "and he was very upset and very sad over the pending case."
"I do not know whether his death resulted from his own actions or from natural causes," he said. "But, whether it was a suicide or a heart attack, I have no doubt that the stress related to this case contributed to the death."
Alter said the father was "well aware" that if his son were tried as an adult, his name would be revealed and he might end up behind bars for a long time.

Prosecution is also seeking to try all 3 "youths" as adults.
Here is a real true story about how ones actions can have dire consequences. It is still unknown if this father took his own life or died of stress induced heart attack due to his pathetic sons behavior.
I just could not imagine a parent having to deal with this.
Time to stop passing blame and blame the attackers.

*** I have not heard anything either. I definately would not discount stress in the form of a heart attack. Something tells me that he committed suicide though. If a teenager doesn't want to do adult time then they shouldn't do adult crime. It's sad really. I wonder if all the people that knew about all this rape hazing going on, now regret not saying anything.

He said the suspects, ages 15, 16, and 17, "acted as a team. They will be treated as a team." Good.
"The principal and coaches who had an opportunity to prevent this attack should acknowledge their responsibility," they said.
Bullying is routine in government schools and is routinely ignored by teachers and administrators. There isn't a lot of difference between jr. and sr. high schools and minimum security prisons.

This is NOT the only Long Island highschool that indulges in sodomy hazing. My sister had a friend whose brother was sodomized in a bathroom by a football team. He had a complete breakdown and the family just picked up and left. In fact, it was said that the two boys at Columbine were severely teased by members of the football team. I actually had to talk someone out of not walking into his school and blowing someone away. You are right, it is VERY much ignored in schools to the peril of innocent students and teachers.

Basically what it comes down to is ZERO TOLERENCE unless your a jock. And many times these boys fathers were jocks too and its a legacy thing.
When I read the stupid reasons some kids have been suspended I get ill. Pointing your finger like a gun in kindergarden things, not tucking your shirt in, having a cap gun in your car or god forbid a butter knife LOL

The poor man and his poor wife. Imagine. If this doesn't punish the kid more than any prison term I don't know what would. Imagine if you were that kid and your dad died and you felt it was due to the stress. And the wife,,good Lord. If I had a son who did this I don't know how I would get thru it.

Did you catch the local DA on one of the morning chat shows this a.m., though? He was making noises about being inclined to go easier if they co-operate and are genuinely remorseful. I hope the local DA's not changing his mind about throwing the book at these thugs.

This is NOT the only Long Island highschool that indulges in sodomy hazing. My God, for all the "Deliverance" jokes we Southerners have to endure, I've never heard of anything like this being commonplace in high schools before now.
Ironic that the attackers, should they go to the bighouse, would probably get to experience the kind of hell they put their young victims through.
To: Aquinasfan
Bullying happens everywhere you get young men (and young women too) together.
Homosexual attacks like this, however, are not so common (thank the Lord). Send the rapists to prison where they will experience all the buttplay they want and then some.

Southron folks have their red necks jokes...
Long Islanders have their thug guido, buttend of NYC jokes...
No doubt they are in for a rude awakening when they go to jail. Having known folks from that area, they're going to be in jail with a whole lotta people they don't like to begin with. Prison rape does not happen as often as people think. However, I've asked men that I know who have been there. They said it doesn't happen too often, and if anything happens, almost universally to child perverts and men who rape women.
BUT they should be thankful they're not in jail in Arizona with Joe Arpaio. They'd be wearing pink underwear, eating day old bologna sandwiches and listening to Rush. If it were my mum's country, they'd be in PIECES. God bless America.

Hahha re Deliverance jokes. My daughter got her hubby to watch Deliverance for the first time prior to bringing him down to Louisiana to meet the parents. It sort of made him very very nervous. It didn't help when we all agreed to hum Dueling Banjos at various times to freak him out.

I stood in the hallway of our local public school and watched a middle school girl jam another girl into the locker door. The nurse was passing by and I called the problem to her attention. She kept walking, saying that those two are always 'at it'.
That was my daughter's last term in that school, or any public school for that matter. She was a fifth grader at the time.

You did right by your daughter. Of course, imagine if one girl had killed the other or something. That same nurse would be feigning shock and awe, when in truth all these people are spokes in the vicious cycle.

I was talking witha woman who's son is on my grandson's skating team. Her son started middle school (jr. high) this year and he plays football. This boy was subjected to this treatment the second week of school. A group of other boys were trying to stick their fingers and other things in the kid's butt.
This group of boys were suspended for three days. The school official told the mother nothing else could be done. She was also warned if charges were filed, the entire scenerio could be turned around to implicate her son. This is sick.
I talk to her about homeschooling and that's what she wants to do. She had no idea were to start. Luck that I do. She is now in touch with people to help her get started.
What is going on here? Why this fascination with boy's butts by other boys? This goes beyond "gay agenda" influence. Normal boys would not want their hands anywhere near another boy's butt. Is it about humiliation? Is that the thrill? I don't believe that all these butt players are sexually interested in their victims.

This is NOT the only Long Island highschool that indulges in sodomy hazing. This may be more prevalent than I thought. I remember a friend of mine telling me that freshman were "hazed" by being forced to jerk off using the ear hole on a football helmet. Sorry to be gross.
Regardless, bullying goes on every day in school. Vicious bullying. I remember it well from my gov't school days in the '70s in an upper class town with the proverbial "great school system." I also remember well the teachers and administrators studiously ignoring it.
John Stossel (20/20) did a very moving report on school bullying a year or two ago. Many bullied children commit suicide.
