45,000 E-mails and Counting – Thank You

October 6, 2003

2:08 PM ET BEGIN TRANSCRIPT Rush Limbaugh Radio Show

Let me again express a sentiment of pure love and appreciation for all of you. Since last week, when the ESPN brouhaha hit and the drug story hit, the number of e-mails is unbelievable to me. It's approaching the 45,000 mark now. I continue to be overawed by it.

And I just want to take some time here to acknowledge a vast majority of people's support. It is overwhelming. And I want you to know I'm getting it and I receive it. It moves me deeply and greatly. I appreciate it, as I have your support of this program all 15 years, more than I am able to express with words. And I just want you to know that. I never have said it enough, and I want to try to correct that from now on, but I said last Friday that we in this program, we have almost a familial type relationship that has evolved here, and I understand what that entails. And I understand the bond of loyalty that exists and what ties that loyalty together, and one of the things is trust. And I realize that that is shaken in a lot of you, but yet you maintain that you are full-fledged behind me. And I appreciate that, and you will have that support, I hope, validated. You will know that I have continued, and will do what I have to do to earn it, and never take it for granted.

Before we get any further with all this I just want you to know how I appreciate what you're all saying, how much I appreciate all that you've done over all these years and how desperately much I appreciate your expressions of support now. Believe me. I notice it and I'm taking none of it for granted. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

I think we need to separate ESPN and the Enquirer story. Here are my thoughts:

1. ESPN -- The PC extortion team (Jackson, Sharpton, Clark) were in rare form on this one. They conveniently missed Michael Irvin's verbal "Rush has a point" comment and successfully brow-beat the guy into submission in record time. I truly believe there is nothing more crippling to this nation than the liberal media and its pet causes, which have grown into monstrosities. The amount of mind-bending dungh that has been sprayed upon this nation's pop culture (e.g. MTV -- which used to be a music video network before becoming a leftist bullhorn) and political institutions is breath-taking. Point is, Rush didn't stand a chance. He was yelling "fire" in a burning theatre and was promptly kicked to the curb.

2. Enquirer. "I won't say anything until I know what I'm up against legally." Now, I'm as big a Rush fan as anyone, but since when did "I'm innocent of these charges" become a self-incriminating statement? There's a lot of denial going on with this board, and the fact is, you and I and everyone else on this board would be foaming at the mouth if we found out James Carville was allegedly making black market drug deals to support an addiction. The idea of "compassion" for his problem would not even surface.

That's what I have a problem with. It's tantamount to the generic crime caught on tape and the mother who insists, "not my son -- that wasn't my son."

If Rush is innocent, he's done everyone a disservice by not proclaiming his innocence. If he's guilty to some extent of involvement with illegal activity, then he needs to face the justice system. It's that simple. To give him a pass because he's "Rush" is offensive to the very values he shared with us.

He knows he's guilty and he doesn't want to make it worse. The fact is we have seen liberals have an addiction to pain killers and we didn't crucify them. Matthew Perry had an addiction and almost got written out of Friends once.

I don't think he should be crucified, either. I would RATHER (if any of this is even true) he were getting them prescribed from doctors. It's the element of consorting with a criminal element that makes this an explosive issue.

Celebrities and even athletes (see ) can claim dependency and receive treatment with the opportunity to return to their jobs when they're "healthy". Rush should be afforded the same benefit in those circumstances. The question is, would you or I have the same benefit? I'd be out of a job and un-hireable in my field (and without millions and millions of dollars in the bank). It's just a little bit of a reality check. It really ought to be substance over style. I'm afraid we're worshipping the style and ignoring the substance without all the facts.

WE didn't give them a pass, the media did. And I don't think anyone wants to pile on someone who has an addiction (unless it's a conservative figure). If we didn't demand accountability, it's our own fault.

Oh god.. ok ok change the arguement to a totally different thing. NOBDODY SAID THERE WASNT ENOUGH BLACK QUARTERBACKS IN THE NFL.

Totally different arguement.. you argueing jobs for black people verus.. hyping a player's skill because of his color.

Please don't bother me with this crap.

You said people who bring up race should be fired.

I give you two prominent examples of sportscasters who openly discussed race.

I can understand why you don't want to be bothered backing up your own asanine statements, but your crap identification skills need some work.

I don't see the double standard.. inject race into the arguement and you get fired.. period.

You're right you didn't see it. Tons of liberal sportswriters have injected race into pro sports for years, and never lost their jobs over it. One conservative mentions it and loses his job.

And instead of demanding one consistent standard you come out and join the liberals attacking him. You are clearly part of the problem.

If Rush is innocent, he's done everyone a disservice by not proclaiming his innocence.

This is what I had initially thought too. Since then I talked to a friend of a friend who is an attorney and she said even if he is totally innocent of everything she would still advise him to say absolutely nothing. As to whether he's done something wrong I don't know, we'll just have to wait and see.

If he's guilty to some extent of involvement with illegal activity, then he needs to face the justice system. It's that simple. To give him a pass because he's "Rush" is offensive to the very values he shared with us.

I agree. I hope IF he's done something wrong he will admit it unequivocally and accept whatever punishment goes with it like a man.

That's because you can't see the difference between what Rush did and "trying to get more black coaches" into the NFL. Your loss.

It's just not that difficult to see, is it? Yet our friend has obviously been overcome by almond fumes.

But I thought our discussion was done after your last childish post? My mistake. I so desperately want to participate in your, ahem, thought-provoking interaction. Please, dear, tell me exactly what I have avoided, and I will immediately correct this situation.

You know, along the lines of you avoiding taking James Brown and/or Chris Berman to task for trumpeting the lack of black coaches in the NFL.

My loss? no its America's loss that politically correct liberals double standards rule the day. But you don't really care about what's right, you don't care about what's good for America. No, all you liberals ever really care about is your power. And your biggest tool in getting is to try to silence all dissent because your ideas can't sell where there is a free exchange of ideas so you have to rig the game to win it.

The games up. The charade is over. Come out and admit what we all can see. You're nothing but a Stalinist liberal trying to silence your opposition, because you can't win any other way can you?

The most important question of all is this: Is there any hope the Cubs will skip Clement in the rotation and throw Wood behind Prior? It's too bad we couldn't seal up Atlanta with Clement and throw Wood in game 1...

I remember Rush laughing so hard at the picture on his radio show. And he said something like "Those guys at FreeRepublic are great." I hope his problem is soon over.

Yep ! When Rush mentioned Paul's picture on his show, it flooded the FreeRepublic.com website. I remember wondering why I was having trouble navigating or even getting in. It took me a day or two, but I finally found out why.
