Scientists vie to break junk DNA's secret code

By Roger Highfield, Science Editor
(Filed: 06/10/2003)

Huge tracts of human DNA, previously written off as meaningless junk, have been found to contain a hitherto unrecognised "genetic grammar", making the language of our genes much more complex than previously thought.

The discovery is of potentially huge significance, since it could lead to an entirely new explanation for certain diseases and symptoms. A race is now on among teams of scientists worldwide to investigate this cryptic code.

While the genetic recipe of a human being is spelt out with three billion letters of DNA code, only about two per cent of these correspond to the genes - the DNA that describes the proteins that build and operate bodies.

In the latest issue of the journal Science, Prof Stylianos Antonarakis of the University of Geneva Medical School, Dr Ewen Kirkness of the Institute of Genomic Research, Maryland, and colleagues have reported compelling evidence that up to three per cent of our genetic material has a crucial role that is not understood.

They made the unexpected discovery that some DNA regions of humans, dogs and species as distant as elephant and wallaby are nearly identical. These regions of what were once called junk have been dubbed "conserved non-genic sequences", or CNGs, a reference to how they are not conventional genes.

Prof Antonarakis said: "I suspect that mutations in CNGs may contribute to numerous genetic disorders." Defects in CNGs could result in illness while the symptoms of Down's syndrome, caused by an extra copy of a chromosome, might be linked to the presence of additional CNGs.

"Many laboratories are now working on identifying pathogenic mutations," he said.

To get back to the subject: There's high interest in junk DNA.

And most of it is still junk. The abstract for this paper claims only 0.3 - 1 % of the genome consists of these conserved sequences.

Yes, It sure would be nice to have this subject (and other REAL science) discussed without the usual trolls posting troll bunk.

Yup, since post 94, 95 when the evo trolls arrived they have turned this from a discussion of the article to a long string of personal attacks. That's all those Clintonites can do.

I believe in evolution and I'm a practicing member of the Orthodox Church of America, which has no problem with evolution.

'Evolution' is a very broad word in use. Darwinian evolution is certainly atheist since it denies that man was created in God's image. While evos (because it is scientifically impossible) deny that abiogenesis (that God did not create life) has anything to do with evolution, a quick look at TalkOrigins and these threads will show that evos also support a completely materialistic agenda.

this thread was doing fine until people who disagreed with me came into it.

Nope. You were disagreeing with me but were discussing the subject, not indulging in personal attacks. The evo thugs have turned this thread into a discussion of posters instead of the subject. This is a typical Clintonite tactic of attacking the messenger when there is no refutation to the message.

[Aric2000 aka Ogmios]You admitted under your last handle that you didn't really know anything about evolution and now the rest of the truth comes out, your only real goal is to be a disrupter and attack people who believe in God instead of this evolution nonsense.

It's not only Aric who knows no science and is out to disrupt these threads, Mr. Placemarker and Vade together with him and a few fellow thugs try to turn every thread into a long string of personal attacks. They are the folk who start yelling at a speech so that the speaker cannot be heard, they are the tyrants who punish those who try to tell the truth.

A sample of the reasoned, informative, and intelligent dialogue whose loss is being bemoaned above: post 14, back in the good old days.

That is the kind of arrogance and uninformed nonsense that evolutionists have been spewing and has been completely refuted by science. Only evos would be so stupid and/or dishonest to claim that 95% of DNA is junk just there so they could prove their stupid theory. Evolution has done more harm to science and consequently killed numerous people with their dishonest arrogance.

I'm on notice for the first time since I've been posting (and I've been quite an active poster over the years) and its all based on a lie.

Yup, it is all a blood-sport with this crowd. Like the brown shirts they are they seek to destroy anyone who disagrees with them.

I also see that they are completely spamming this thread so that no one coming to it expecting a scientific discussion will see anything worth reading. Pretty disgusting tactics are being allowed in a supposedly FreeRepublic.

RWN,
Dittojed2 claimed that Aric2000 was in fact into Wiccan/Celtic stuff. Odd, he hasn't yet answered the direct question.

Yup, the above is absolutely true and I have backed it up already many times. The new frontier in biology for the last ten years has been the discovery of how the many different genes and proteins get expressed. All this happens in what the liars of evolution call 'junk DNA'. It also needs to be noted that carrying so much dead weight in our DNA would be totally unfit and thus contradict the very 'engine' of evolution 'fitness'. They cannot refute the truth so they must spam, insult and make wise crack remarks as if their lame opinions constituted any sort of evidence against what has been said by me.

I think everyone has had quite enough of this poster's disruptive ravings. Here's a few recent examples, with some of the worst of it underlined for emphasis. (I'm the "Mr. Placemarker" he's talking about):

If you need to see more of the same, by the same poster, look at post 14, 129, and 186. I respectfully suggest that enough is enough.
