Scientists vie to break junk DNA's secret code

By Roger Highfield, Science Editor
(Filed: 06/10/2003)

Huge tracts of human DNA, previously written off as meaningless junk, have been found to contain a hitherto unrecognised "genetic grammar", making the language of our genes much more complex than previously thought.

The discovery is of potentially huge significance, since it could lead to an entirely new explanation for certain diseases and symptoms. A race is now on among teams of scientists worldwide to investigate this cryptic code.

While the genetic recipe of a human being is spelt out with three billion letters of DNA code, only about two per cent of these correspond to the genes - the DNA that describes the proteins that build and operate bodies.

In the latest issue of the journal Science, Prof Stylianos Antonarakis of the University of Geneva Medical School, Dr Ewen Kirkness of the Institute of Genomic Research, Maryland, and colleagues have reported compelling evidence that up to three per cent of our genetic material has a crucial role that is not understood.

They made the unexpected discovery that some DNA regions of humans, dogs and species as distant as elephant and wallaby are nearly identical. These regions of what were once called junk have been dubbed "conserved non-genic sequences", or CNGs, a reference to how they are not conventional genes.

Prof Antonarakis said: "I suspect that mutations in CNGs may contribute to numerous genetic disorders." Defects in CNGs could result in illness while the symptoms of Down's syndrome, caused by an extra copy of a chromosome, might be linked to the presence of additional CNGs.

"Many laboratories are now working on identifying pathogenic mutations," he said.

Junior, I'm not going to argue about this. Aric is back. You know it. Vade knows it. And, Free Republic knows it. If they don't want to do anything about it, I will live with that. But he's not getting by with this "I'm new to this forum and totally unbiased" schpiel. He's the same old Aric whether he admits it or not.

All Mr. Anti-Holy Warrior has to do is answer the question. Is he Aric2000 or not? Pretty straight forward isn't it?

For more of the game you're playing, and how it comes out, start reading here to at least here. Same crew, before a few casualties. Perhaps the ugliness is more obvious.

I had the same crew yipping and yapping after me a couple of times, notably on the thread that was pulled with with this message. These are the dogs you're bedding down with. Expect fleas.

Actually, I don't believe that is Aric. This guy is a professed Christian. Aric was an atheist. The writing styles are different. Aric misspelled quite a few of his words, and his sentences were rife with improper lack of capitalization and the occasional sentence fragment. Ogmios is much more careful in his sentence construction. That you never noticed these things indicates you've allowed your predispositions to cloud your judgement.

Please see my post to Dittojed. Even if Ogmios said "no," you wouldn't believe him, would you?

This guy doesn't spell the greatest. Already examined that. His sentence struction is exactly the same. He came to this forum using phrases like Dashole and Holy Warrior. Aric wasn't really "Athiestic" he had strong leanings towards Wiccan/Celtic religion and this guy has admitted his screename is from Celtic religion. This guy is also from Washington State, very near where Aric lived (Gig Harbor according to his profile) and when he first signed on sounded exactly like Aric when Aric was trying to be polite. Look up my previous posts for the rest of the case. At first I thought it could be a friend of Arics, but the Holy Warrior comments threw it over the top. It is Aric.

Vade,
A2/Oggy cries about the lying decietfulness and maliciousness of the "Holy Warriors" and he is in this forum under decietful circumstances because he got banned for being malicious. So quit your whining and just have him answer the question. Is he the same person who posted under the name of Aric2000 or not? Yes or no. What is so difficult?
Loving Regards,

I did notice these things too Junior. That you would assume I didn't shows you have underestimated the care with which I have taken before making this accusation.

The styles don't match at first glance. If I get ambitious, I'll run a collection of posts through my Regularized Quadratic Discriminant Analysis Author Identification program.

So do lots of freepers. Not a very distinguishing feature.

No offense, but you seem to be unhealthily obsessed with this. Does it really matter that much one way or another?

Of course they do. He's tried hard on this one (unlike Jaguar 1118), but it's Aric.

Where was all your crying when GSHS snuck back for a second chance, since blown? The management does the banning at their discretion. The creepy stalkies shot their bolt on another thread already. Either Omgios isn't Aric, or the management is rethinking a banning which may have been triggered by an organized campaign from the DU II site. I don't know. I'm not the one to ask, although that didn't stop you from asking me. I do not make people do things on this forum and am not privy to insider information. (About as far from it as one can get.)

I'm not whining to you but rather telling you how things look to people still in contact with reality. It amuses me that there's no breaking through.

"Dashole" is used by conservatives outside this forum, too. It's a fairly common epithet. "Holy Warrior" was imported into this forum from outside and was originally identified back in the old BBS days. The Celtic thingy may just be coincidental. Lots of folks are from Washington State.

Honestly, if this guy were Aric, he'd have gone off on you long before now. Aric was not renowned for holding his temper, which was one reason he went bye-bye. This guy seems to have the patience of Job.

Quite a few people lurk for months before registering and posting. In my case, it took a dear cousin's suggestion that I post my letter to Rep. Mollohan re Clinton's impeachment.

That was my point. He used it from the get go, supposedly unfamiliar with this site. Freepers do use that phrase, but if he were just totally unaware of freepers until he signed on (as he claimed) then he wouldn't have known to use that phrase, probably wouldn't be using "Holy Warrior", and any other number of distinguishing Freeper phrases.

Junior,
No, I would not believe him, because of my post #199. Now if after reading my post, would you believe him if he said he wasn't? What I am trying to establish here is that the truth is meaningless to A2/Oggy and that all his emotional rantings about "Holy Warriors" should be considered the load of crap, from an emotionally disturbed person, that it is. Now again just have him answer the question is Ogmios the same person who formerly posted as Aric2000 or not? Yes or no.
Honesty is the best policy regards,

"Holy Warrior" was imported into this forum from outside and was originally identified back in the old BBS days.

But I claim "Holy Warrior Syndrome" as a purported psychiatric category as my own invention, inspired by the abject inability of certain blue posters to admit any wrong above the typo level, ever.

Answer the question.

Sometimes "You are in the wrong office so please take your silly-assed problem down the hall" is the right answer.
