Scientists vie to break junk DNA's secret code

By Roger Highfield, Science Editor
(Filed: 06/10/2003)

Huge tracts of human DNA, previously written off as meaningless junk, have been found to contain a hitherto unrecognised "genetic grammar", making the language of our genes much more complex than previously thought.

The discovery is of potentially huge significance, since it could lead to an entirely new explanation for certain diseases and symptoms. A race is now on among teams of scientists worldwide to investigate this cryptic code.

While the genetic recipe of a human being is spelt out with three billion letters of DNA code, only about two per cent of these correspond to the genes - the DNA that describes the proteins that build and operate bodies.

In the latest issue of the journal Science, Prof Stylianos Antonarakis of the University of Geneva Medical School, Dr Ewen Kirkness of the Institute of Genomic Research, Maryland, and colleagues have reported compelling evidence that up to three per cent of our genetic material has a crucial role that is not understood.

They made the unexpected discovery that some DNA regions of humans, dogs and species as distant as elephant and wallaby are nearly identical. These regions of what were once called junk have been dubbed "conserved non-genic sequences", or CNGs, a reference to how they are not conventional genes.

Prof Antonarakis said: "I suspect that mutations in CNGs may contribute to numerous genetic disorders." Defects in CNGs could result in illness while the symptoms of Down's syndrome, caused by an extra copy of a chromosome, might be linked to the presence of additional CNGs.

"Many laboratories are now working on identifying pathogenic mutations," he said.

Holy warriors ... bolsheviks --- " a latter-day Politburo (( SAINTS - gods too ))" !

e-as ...

No. The ACLU says the First Amendment protects their right (( atheism )) to free speech, which the Second does not protect your right to keep and bear arms.

I was going to say they don't understand the concept that the militia is made up of the very people referenced in the text of the amendment. But they do get this, and very well. They simply know that when the people are completely disarmed, there is no impediment to the ... ACLU becoming --- a latter-day Politburo.

I'm telling you, gather weapons and ammo now while you still can.

I find the Holy Warrior syndrom on the net a lot, it is easily recognizable, and some of you seem to have it. Which is sad, but a statement of how things are in the world right now.

Hi Aric, Thought you were banned. See you changed your name and sneaked back in . While your name has changed, your Christian bashing and unmistakable style sure hasn't.

here, who continues his perpetual snit here, you show up here and you ain't talkin' about DNA, honey! -Vade-

Before Vade, Aric2000 and Mr. Placemarker arrived, the subject of the thread was being discussed. Now the thugs of evolution are insulting and indulging in personal attacks. Like all tyrants, these folk cannot stand honest discussion because they know their atheism, their evolutionary theory, their so called science is a total joke and they cannot win any argument honestly. Lies, smears, insults, threats, ganging up on people is all they know how to do. Like a pack of wolves they descend on a thread to destroy it and those who disagree with them.

Yes, It sure would be nice to have this subject (and other REAL science) discussed without the usual trolls posting troll bunk.

Look in this thread, most evolutionists are atheists.

I believe in evolution and I'm a practicing member of the Orthodox Church of America, which has no problem with evolution. I haven't seen comments on this thread that I would call "atheist."

Look at the promoters of evolution - Darwin, Haeckel, Huxley, Dawkins, Eldredge, Gould - all atheists.

The fact that someone who is atheist supports evolution does not mean that evolution is an atheist ideology.

Actually, it was before gore pinged in Ditto. (Note that he was also hoping for renowned science-interpreter conservababeJen as well.) Ditto's first post was an attempt to get Ogmios banned. The thread was diverted when the usual anti-science crowd hijacked it, period. We've seen this and seen this.

Of course, even before the arrival of Ditto we had this bit of blue spew. This person is grandfathered into the right to hurl charges of any and all sorts, sort of like the last legal spitballers.

I don't run the forum and am not the person you are accusing of being a sneakback. If I don't seem very concerned, I didn't see the same hue and cry from your crowd when goodseedhomeschool crept back in as "concisetraveler" as part of a campaign to harass freepers on a target list posted at DU and eventually get them banned. ("I'm number two! I'm number two!")

Thus, there is no particular reason I should confide any suspicions I may have with a pack of jackals.

To be very clear about my participation in this thread, here's a complete catalogue of my posts before this one:

Post 27, I activate my ping list.
Post 31, I reply to Modernman:

Yes. But you will soon be exposed to the views of those who think otherwise. Brace yourself.

Post 95: I reply to Ogmios: And economics is for "what's in it for me?"

Now, in post 186, one of the last remaining trolls says, of me (and others):

Before Vade, Aric2000 and Mr. Placemarker arrived, the subject of the thread was being discussed. Now the thugs of evolution are insulting and indulging in personal attacks. I have posted no insults, no personal attacks, no smears, no threats, nor have I ganged up on anyone. Further, I've done nothing to destroy the thread. Nor have I hit the abuse button, notwithstanding more than sufficient provocation.

Your behavior is clearly inflammatory and will not be tolerated. You made everybody who has trolled this thread since you showed up do what they did. It's all your fault. You are the puppet-master, the string-puller. Gore and Ditto are putty in your hands, the way you can make them fly off the handle with the simple posting of a multi-shaded placemarker. I salute you, Satan!

(Note to the humor-impaired: the above is sarcasm.)

That is the kind of arrogance and uninformed nonsense that evolutionists have been spewing and has been completely refuted by science. Only evos would be so stupid and/or dishonest to claim that 95% of DNA is junk just there so they could prove their stupid theory. Evolution has done more harm to science and consequently killed numerous people with their dishonest arrogance.

Let's count up the names here, just for the record.

  1. arrogant
  2. uninformed
  3. nonsensical
  4. spewers of nonsense that has been refuted by science
  5. stupid
  6. dishonest
  7. harmful
  8. killers

And lest we forget, evolutionists are also name-callers.

I state facts and you harass me about being someone that you do not like and has been banned.

Christian bashing, no, it is called fighting Holy Warrior syndrom, before the Holy Warriors are able to destroy another forum.

I am Christian, So to accuse me of Christian Bashing is ridiculous, but then again, when you are a holy warrior, only your kind of Christianity is tolerated.

Only your views are tolerated as well, as usual, yes, you are just as much a Holy Warrior as Dittojed2, and Gore3000.

You make yourselves so obvious.

And I have not been banned from this forum, but if your attacks on me continue, Your attacks will be dealt with, so you need to stick with the subject of the thread and quit harassing me with your nonsense.

This is harassment and stalking, you have lost 2 from your little Holy Warrior Group already for doing just that, care to join your fellows? It would be my pleasure to cause just such an activity.

Aric2000,
You have given yourself away. I don't care how many forums you run or moderate you don't know anything about science and evolution and your responses as Ogmios are the same nonsense you put forth as your last handle. You got banned for your misconduct and as no suprise, your are trying to skirt your punishment. This Holy Warrior crap is nothing but a simple attack on people who have enough sense to recognize that, there is in fact a God and we will have to answer to Him. Your self-righteous religious zelotry is a syndrom of its own, and it is called bigotry.
You admitted under your last handle that you didn't really know anything about evolution and now the rest of the truth comes out, your only real goal is to be a disrupter and attack people who believe in God instead of this evolution nonsense. That is why you got banned. So if your so busy with your other forums just take your misguided biases to them instead.
Best Regards,
Boiler Plate

Puhlease, if science used god, it would be religion.

Science takes VERIFIABLE evidence, uses that evidence to build hypothesis, and then if those hypothesis are peer reviewed, pass a number of criteria, etc, etc, then they become theories. such as the THEORY of evolution.

God is Unverifiable, PROVE scientifically that god exists.

Go ahead, I'd love to see you try.

If you can scientifically verify the existence of god, then science can use god as a causation, until then, science can only use that which it can indeed verify as possible and most probable, and goes with and along with naturalistic laws.

Get a grip man, just because science does NOT do what you so strongly wish it would, does not mean that it ever will, or will be capable of doing such a thing.

God as any sort of causation is a religious concept, and therefore CANNOT be scientifically verified, therefore, god as a Causation for ANY type of scientific theory, makes that theory UNSCIENTIFIC by definition.

In scientific study, God cannot be used as a causation, you may see this as a fault, I do not.

Faith is for God, scientific evidence, and laws are for science, the 2 are different and do 2 different things, you mix God with science, you get religion, so keep God in religion, because that is exactly where he belongs.

Science cannot use God as a causation and still be science.

Therefore any question of God, must be made at a faith based level, or religion, and science cannot use faith, therefore science cannot use God.

Easy stuff, and I don't want science using God, because then it's answers become useless, and all study stops.

Why should we study why and how, if God did it? God did it, OK, we know the answer, we're done.

I don't want science using God for anything, because that is not what it is for. And science agrees with me, it cannot use God as a causation, because God is beyond physical laws, and can break them at any time he wishes.

And also the fact that you cannot prove the existence or nonexistence of God, which is a REALLY good reason for science to stay away from such faith based thinking.

You seem to like that God can not be used a scientific causation thing a lot A2. However you never seem to be able to provide a source for your statement.

So lets see who is a liar here. Are you Ogmios, the same person who posted under the name of Aric2000 or not?
Yes or no.

My first post was NOT an attempt to get Aric banned. I didn't ping the admin moderator on that post. Considering that I've alerted Free Republic to Aric's new identity once before, I'm under no delusion that they are going to ban him now. Nevertheless, he hasn't gotten by with his continual lying about his identity. He is Aric. Always has been Aric. Always will be. Good day.
