Illegal-Alien Drivers Licenses Will be Overturned in California (and other election news)
Tustin Tiller Days Crowds

Could it be that Gray Davis is the best thing to happen to the conservative movement in California since Ronald Reagan? Hmmm.
I spent part of Saturday afternoon working at the Tustin Area Republican Assembly (TARA) booth at the Tustin Tiller Days, here in the heart of Orange County. Tiller Days is a local civic celebration with parade, carnival, food, music, and lots of booths. TARA typically has a booth at Tiller Days to register voters, recruit members, etc...
Saturday was crazy. We had some "Arnold" signs up in our booth, and all day long we had to answer the following questions: "Do you have any more Arnold stickers?" "Do you have any more Arnold buttons?" Sadly, the few stickers we had were all gone very quickly on Friday night. We never had any buttons. But the point is, the people of Orange County were "pumped up" about Arnold. They were sickened by Gray Davis, sickened by the L.A. Times, and ready to do their duty.
Of course, there were a lot of McClintock supporters too, most of whom were in a quandry about what to do. Vote for Tom and risk a Governor Bustamante? Or hold your nose and vote for Arnold?
Usually at Tiller days we'll get a mostly positive reception from the passing crowds, with the occassional liberal or Democrat stopping by to argue with us. Saturday was remarkable because of the incredibly small number of Democrat defenders we encountered. They were almost invisible. In fact, most of the Democrats we talked to actually stopped by the booth to CHANGE their registration to REPUBLICAN.
I am convinced that the recall will pass in a landslide, and that both Republican candidates will finish ahead of Bustamante. This is because the anti-Davis crowd is much bigger and much more motivated to vote than the pro-Davis crowd. The anti-Davis voters are going to go to the polls and toss the Governor out on his ear. While they are doing that, they are going to vote for one of the Republicans as well. Many of the hard-core conservatives (who will vote in large numbers) will back McClintock. The "anybody but a Democrat" Republicans, and the "moderates" and many Democrats will vote for Arnold.
The only people who will vote for BustaMecha are the ardent Davis supporters, and there just aren't that many people left in this state who would swerve to keep from running the Governor over if he were lying in the street, let alone go out of their way to vote for him or Bustamove.
But the truly remarkable thing about Saturday was the voter anger about the illegal-alien drivers licenses law. We had at our booth a bunch of the petitions to get this odious law on the ballot through the referendum process. Everybody wanted to sign our petitions. People were standing in line to sign the petition. The carneys working the rides were stopping by on their breaks to sign the petition. People were seriously hacked-off about this law, and they wanted to do something to fix it NOW! In my three hour shift we must have gathered over three hundred signatures, without breaking a sweat.
People were equally torqued about the car-tax increase, and wanted to sign those petitions as well, but we weren't able to get any of those for the booth (unfortunately).
I am boldly predicting that these referenda will qualify for the ballot in record time, and both laws will be overturned by HUGE margins. (Is that a really bold prediction?)
All of which will redound to the benefit of the GOP in California. Gray Davis' desperate and spiteful actions in the waning days of his administration will hopefully remind the people of California why they should vote Republican. It is a reminder that, unfortunately, is needed far too frequently and which is forgotten far too soon.

SB60 Referendum BUMP!
To: Earl B.
I got my petition in the mail last week... Mrs. Rocket and I both signed, and I was ready to put back in the mail, but I decided to take it to work and leave it on my desk. I got 5 other signatures within 30 minutes.
I requested that they send me some more...

http://www.saveourlicense.comSave Our License is a grassroots campaign sponsored by the California Republican Assembly to place a referendum on the ballot to repeal SB 60, the law giving drivers licenses to illegal aliens.

SB60 (the driver license bill) WILL be overturned. I'm circulating petitions myself. Anyone who wants to do the same can go to
SaveOurLicense.com and have them mail you a petition (due to the nature of the formatting that the petition has to have, it wasn't possible to make it downloadable). Anyone who wants to do more than just gripe about the situation on FR, here's your chance.

I think the driver's licence and registration tax issues are political dynamite. Played right, they could be used to oust the Dims from control of the legislature.

I agree. Davis would probably be up 3 - 7 points if he hadn't thrown all that BS pander legislation out to the masses.

looks like Davis and the dems really stepped on it this time.
The illegal alien license is really a hot issue, and I think will keep Busty's numbers low what with his connection to MeCHA.
I'll be at my polling place tomorrow, bright and early when they're open for business. I'm trying to control myself so I don't plunge the pin all the way through the voting machine as I yell, "Take that, you RAT scum!!" LOL

Thought: Orange County is not perfectly representative of the state as a whole, and people who stop by a Republican Assembly booth are not perfectly representative of Orange County.
I don't think anyone seriously doubts that the driver license law will be repealed if the referendum attracts sufficient funding. Money has stayed on the sidelines waiting out the results of the recall. California has voted conservatively on virtually all of the big picture initiatives and referenda in the past since 1990 -- term limits, illegal aliens, affirmative action, gay marriage, etc.
Nevertheless, the referendum will face serious legal challenges. The Prop. 187 precendents and the Supreme Court's now-well-established line of "invidious selection" cases (mainly in the gay context) could be used to invalidate it. As wrong as it is, the theory could easily be extended to the proposition that any legislative act which singles out any disfavored class of person for the purpose of denying them any public benefit, privilege or immunity, is unconstitutional per se. Although the recall itself simply repeals legislation, the language used in the petitions and the marketing/promotion of them can be used to show that the intent of the referendum was to deny a right to Mexicans. In other words, the law is a one-way ratchet -- it may not have been constitutionally >required< to let illegal aliens get licenses, but once it was granted, it can't be overturned on any basis which suggests that Mexicans should be denied something Americans have.

It is amazing how many people, who voted for Davis this last November want him gone/out of there.
Lets all get out and vote tomorrow. If our guys come in #1 and #2, that will be a clear message to the rats in the Kaliforniacator legislature not to mess around with reform.

Why bother, as it will be struck down as "Unconstitutional" by some leftist Judge...I doubt it. The California code governing referenda isn't subject to much interpretation. And the Cal Supreme Court is still more Republican appointees than not. Which is one good reason to get another Republican in the Governor's chair as soon as possible, before that changes.

Tomorrow this wonderful scene will be replicated all over California as Herr Davis is dropped kicked out of office!

I'll be there with my 18 year-old daughter, who will be voting for the first time.
And she's her mother's daughter, all right. ;-)

I'd be the first to admit that O.C. is not representative of the state as a whole. But we were seeing Tilt-A-Wirl operators from San Bernardino at the booth signing the petitions. And life-long Dems switching parties. That was unusual for us.
I don't share your pessimism on the referendum. If passed, the referendum merely restores the state to the status-quo-ante. And it doesn't just apply to Mexicans. It applies to Afghans, Saudis, and the French as well. Not to say some judge won't try. But we've successfully recalled judges in this state before too.

The "anybody but a Democrat" Republicans, and the "moderates" and many Democrats will vote for Arnold. Useful idiots for the RINOs. By the way, I have never been so proud to be associated with the California Republican Assembly. Go, McClintock!
