My grandmother lived all of her 95 years near the Wyoming - Montana border. Her father was born in Utah, and his father was born in Indiana.

She had a very distinct accent. Call it rural west, or whatever you wish. Some folks who might meet her WOULD call it "hick."

She never set foot in the south.

Whew!!....I feel better. I thought for a second there that they might actually have hicks in New Mexico as well.

Yes, I'm sure his hick accent was a southern hick one, but don't presume the two are meant to be equivalent.
And Gee, don't get so sensivitive.. he obviously meant to ridicule the stereotype, not promote it.
