My grandmother lived all of her 95 years near the Wyoming - Montana border. Her father was born in Utah, and his father was born in Indiana.
She had a very distinct accent. Call it rural west, or whatever you wish. Some folks who might meet her WOULD call it "hick."
She never set foot in the south.
