"but he has steered a moderately liberal course so he could continue to raise money from big business."

So Gray Davis, a budget-busting tax and spend liberal, is considered moderate because he will exempt certain big business from onerous laws and regulations if they give him campaign contributions.

That appears to be less likely with each passing day.

There are no more passing days. The closer that Tom and Arnold get, the better Bustamente's chances get.

The closer that Tom and Arnold get, the better Bustamente's chances get.

That's undoubtedly true. But if their pool of voters is more tha twice as great as Cruz's, the point is moot. No matter the split either Arnold or Tom would win.

This was interesting from an article yesterday showing the the difference between the appeal amongst the candidates... heck some may not have drawn many supporters to thier rallies as they aren't mentioned

Arnold Schwarzenegger’s massive rally on the south side of the state Capitol, the climax of his four-day bus tour of California, provided just what the Los Angeles Times editorial board must fear. It was a dramatic demonstration of how a powerful celebrity can channel populist anger, creating a political experience unmediated by elites. While Schwarzenegger for the most part struck a positive, upbeat tone Sunday afternoon, declining to attack his principal antagonists -- Gray Davis, Cruz Bustamante, and the Times -- the disdain for the political class underlying his message was palpable.

Some 10,000 people attended, twice as many as last year’s farmworkers march on the Capitol, the only comparable rally in recent years.

In contrast, Davis drew only a few hundred supporters to his big rally Saturday at the Teamsters’ hall in Oakland, despite the presence of the governor, the state’s two U.S. senators, Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer, and Willie Brown and Jerry Brown, making a rare appearance on behalf of his former chief

"Arnold's greatest contribution to American life may be that he will resurrect the liberal wing of the Republican Party. Some of these right-wing ideologues don't understand that yet. I think he's a new kind of Republican,"

Laurence Leamer, author of "The Kennedy Women.

...because Wilson is pulling all of Arnold's strings?

Flat out lie. (sound familiar?)

Effective leaders put talented, intelligent people in key staff positions and rely on them to sift through the intricacies of policies.

Pete 'Tax Increase' Wilson?

Warren 'I-Never-Saw-An-Abortion-I-Didn't-Like' Buffett?

Robert 'Greenpeace' Kennedy, Jr.?

You could also read what Arnold said:

Schwarzenegger: Cut spending, taxes

As governor, I will work to get the state's fiscal house in order. Immediately upon taking office, I will order an independent, top-to-bottom audit of the state budget -- due back to me in 60 days. That way, we can get a clear picture -- uncluttered by politics and special interest influence -- of how we can bring spending under control without neglecting our most important obligations.

This audit will accomplish two important things. First, it will give us independent information to determine our true operating deficit. And second, it will let us identify specific line items that can be reduced.

The problem is overspending, and the deficit must be closed by getting spending under control. Our first order of business is to get California's operating deficit under control. I will ensure that California's government lives within its means -- something working families manage to do every day -- and rein in spending to close the operating deficit.

I am also firmly opposed to raising taxes.

Californians are already overtaxed, they suffer under one of the highest tax burdens in the nation, and just about everything a Californian does today is subject to one tax or another. You turn on the light in the morning -- you get taxed. You drink your coffee -- you get taxed. You get in your car - - you get taxed. Tax, tax, tax -- from morning to night.

Hitting taxpayers up for more money isn't the answer to our state's budget and economic problems. They shouldn't be punished because the politicians in Sacramento have failed to keep the books balanced.

The problem is overspending, and the operating deficit must be closed by getting spending under control. That's why I support placing a cap on state spending.

More McClintock-broke-his-promise-to-Issa reasoning. You know they're scraping the bottom of the barrel when this (an unfounded allegation, one person's word against another in private conversation between two political rivals) is the most damning thing McClintock's Wilsonite enemies can come up with in column after column against him. (BTW, if Jennifer Nelson is (R),what about the 11th Commandment?)

It seems that McClintock detractors are tone deaf to the issues. They'd rather hear a pied piper playing the party loyalty song than the facts, regarding Wilson, Davis, or Arnold.

PS Jennifer Nelson == FairOpinion?

;-)

They're so used to saying 'BOO!', they are blind to the fact that everyone has already seen under the bed and in the closet and isn't scared.

Same goes for Issa's claim. Even if it's true, and I seriously doubt it, it is moot. There is no chance of Tom being a spoiler.

>>But he and a band of loyal supporters fiercely believe he is the only Republican running who should be governor. McClintock is hoodwinking his supporters into thinking he has a chance. He knows he doesn't. And if he can't seriously admit that, that's one more reason he shouldn't be governor.<<

An excellent analysis. I usually try not say anything bad about another Republican, and certainly not against one who is a Conservative. However, McClintock is now joining the Democrats in piling on Schwarzenegger for the LA Times' "weekend-before-the-election" sludge reporting. If he cannot effectively sell his conservative message to those around him without a side serving of mud, he certainly could not function effectively as Governor of California.

This is nothing more than a sour grapes, thinly-disguised country club Republican hit piece against a fine and decent man.

Since this came from the SF Chronicle, and I've had time to think about it, I realize that this is more likely an attempt to place a permanent wedge in the Republican party in the hopes that it will linger after the election.

I doubt there will be any anger in the McClintock camp. They all rest easy at night knowing they are doing the right thing. I don't even think Mac supporters will be disappointed when Schwatzthegroper wins. True conservatives, who believe in personal repsonsibility, recognize that happpiness is nurtured from within, not given to them by a governor or president or whatever.

Mac the Knife supporters will go on with their lives and continue to produce wealth and opportunity for the poor miserable lemmings who vote based on celebrity or feelings rather than principle.

No matter the split either Arnold or Tom would win.

The polls never pointed to that, unfortunately. When the counts come in for each candidate, we all will see who helped and who hurt our efforts to defeat a Democrat Governor.

Exactly. The Cruz bogeyman is simply no longer effective. Absent that, even these folks agree that Tom is the better choice. I'm a bit surprised they haven't come around to our way of thinking, considering the facts in evidence.

Well, not really surprised...
