McClintock Does Conservatives No Favor

Tom McClintock believes he is helping the conservative cause in California by staying in the governor's race. The state senator from Thousand Oaks couldn't be more wrong.

Attempting to recall Gov. Gray Davis is a risky business. Many people, including U.S. Rep. Darrell Issa, who helped finance the effort, have considered voting against the recall just to avoid the chance of electing Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante to the state's top job. Davis has failed as governor, but he has steered a moderately liberal course so he could continue to raise money from big business. Bustamante, however, has made no effort to disguise his disdain for business owners and will move state policy sharply to the left on all fronts.

Tom McMeathead, the enemy within. He has no chance of winning, staying in the race just shows that Tom only cares about Tom and to hell with CA residents.

Schwarzenegger is a moderate Republican on social issues and a fiscal conservative.

McClintock may have had real gripes with some of the decisions Wilson made as governor, but what's the point of bringing them up now?

Actually, I think that the author is just a smart, sensible person. "Jennifer Nelson, an Oakland writer, worked in policymaking positions in the Deukmejian and Wilson administrations". Finally someone is telling it like it is.

Republicans were avoiding criticizing McClintock, hoping he'll do the right thing. But since he doesn't, his supporters should wake up and smell the coffee and the potential Bustamante victory.

I hope they wake up and vote for Arnold for a Republican victory and a resounding Dem defeat.

If the liberal media are so eager to push McClintock in order to dilute Arnold's vote, how come the SF Chronicle has published this article at such a critical moment?

It seems evident to me that they figure that Gray Davis and Busty are both out of it now, and that they don't want to risk seeing McClintock getting a substantial vote. I don't think he can win now, but he can show that a lot of conservatives are not happy with the RINO.

Is it really a recommendation for Arnold that the media are getting behind him now?

...McClintock has spent many years working to promote conservative policies at the state level. He has the right approach on government spending, taxes and workers' compensation, just to name a few issues. But he doesn't corner the market on conservative principles.

No, he doesn't. There are lots of us out there across America and across California.

Too bad Schwarzenegger shares so few of them.

Seems to me McClintock offers conservatives an additional choice. Whether they take it or not is entirely up to them.

Not to mention his dragging AS rightward - its obvious when listening to AS's current stump speech.

At the very least his staying in the race will convince the CA party that they need to make room inside the 'Big Tent' for old school conservatives - that is if they really want to win more than a handful of races.

It's well known that there are two battling factions in the California Republican party--the conservatives (a large majority of Republican voters) and the Country Clubbers (mostly pros and moneymen). In other words, Nelson is a tool of the RINO party pros, which is determined to use this opportunity to put in their candidate without having to face a primary election, where the voters (mostly conservative) might once again express their dissatisfaction with the RINO candidate foisted on them by the pros.

This kind of behavior has split the party in California and the nation for the past 20 years. If Arnold is elected, we'll see more of the same.

That boogie man worked on the weakminded for a long time. It's what got us into the spot we're in. But it is just plain ridiculous now. Bustamante was never going anywhere after Davis signed the drivers license for illegals bill.

That appears to be less likely with each passing day. If Arnold + Tom > (Bustamante*2), conservatives could vote for the candidate of their choice without fear of throwing the race to Cruz.

And increasingly it appears this scenario is playing out.

There is no question McClintock is a true policy wonk. During the years when he wasn't in the House of Representatives, he studied and wrote about the California state budget for the conservative Claremont Institute. Where other legislators may leave the detail work to their staff members, McClintock is known to intimately study the details of the budget and other state policy matters.

Is this a quality we can admire? Absolutely. Is this a quality that makes a successful governor? No.

Right. You'd rather have an absolute liberal novice who goes to Wilson, Buffett and Kennedy, et al, to tell him what to do and what to think.
