L.A. Times Faces Anger for Schwarzenegger Coverage

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The Los Angeles Times has had about 1,000 readers cancel subscriptions and been "flooded" with angry letters, calls and e-mail protesting its coverage of Arnold Schwarzenegger (news)'s alleged sexual harassment of women, it reported on Sunday.

The newspaper has detailed allegations by a total of 15 women in three front-page stories since Thursday against Schwarzenegger, touching off a controversy that has consumed the final days of Tuesday's recall election in which the actor and former Mr. Universe remains the front-runner.

Schwarzenegger, a Republican, has apologized in a general way for his behavior toward women, while denying the most recent allegations carried by the newspaper in stories on Saturday and Sunday.

He has also accused the Los Angeles Times of working with embattled incumbent Gov. Gray Davis (news - web sites) in a concerted campaign of "puke politics" aimed at derailing his candidacy.

The newspaper has had about 1,000 readers cancel subscriptions and received some 400 phone calls critical of its coverage, "many angry, some profane," as of Saturday, it reported in a story carried inside Sunday's newspaper.

Readers have complained the newspaper singled out Schwarzenegger for critical coverage because of a liberal bias or ran its stories too close to Tuesday's vote, it said.

One reader, Bill Agee, said the newspapers stories were dropped "like stink bombs at the last moment to ruin the momentum (Schwarzenegger's) got."

Los Angeles Times Editor John Carrol was quoted defending the timing of the Schwarzenegger stories, citing the compressed schedule of the recall campaign and the newspaper's critical coverage of both Davis and independent candidate Arianna Huffington, now campaigning against Schwarzenegger.

The newspaper had been working on its initial front-page story for seven weeks and did not receive tips from any of Schwarzenegger's political foes, Carrol said.

Mostly, the newspaper's reporters had just made "cold calls" to people working in the film industry and women listed in the credits of movies starring Schwarzenegger, he said.

On the Schwarzenegger campaign, meanwhile, anger at the state's largest newspaper has become a rallying cry.

Before a Schwarzenegger rally in Modesto, California on Saturday, one speaker, Rob Johnson (news), a radio host, urged the crowd to make the media feel welcome.

"Except for the guy. ... Who's the guy with the L.A. Times? Find him and beat him up would you?" Johnson said jokingly, according to the newspaper.

I will post the telephone number and address for the L.A. Slimes. Urge every Freeper to contact them about their lousy trash reporting. They have lost over 1,100 subscribers as of today. Let's try to make that even more cancellations if possible.

Remember, you can access that rag on the web. Or pick up copies tossed away in coffee shops or at the local Starbucks. Nobody really needs to read the Slimes any way.

People who found it necessary to cancel their LA Times subscriptions are actually not sufficiently Conservative to be trusted to vote correctly.

A real Conservative NEVER subscribed to that worthless piece of trash.

What is it? 200 dollars for a subscription? If so, we may have cost them 200000 dollars. It isn't much, but hopefully, we can get another thousand people to drop their subscriptions.

Is the LA Slimes reporting that some women have come forward saying they were abused by Gray Davis?

As a McClintock backer, these LA Slimes stories irked me bigtime since it hurt him even more than Arnold.

The local paper here is uberleftist. The chair and owner is a former democrat statewide elected official (UM Board of Trustee) from Suburban Detroit.

The county however is 60%+ solid Republican. The paper endorsed the entire statewide democrat ticket as well as two local democrats running. It lit a fire in all the conservative in the county and every republican running won our county(all but two over 60%, 3 over 70%), even in the marginal district. Turnout here was 5% higher than expected.

These people are Arnold voters, not conservatives.

Pragmatism is a conservative value, which is why most conservatives will vote for Arnold.

I'm a conservative (true & real), and I cancelled my subscription this week in anger at their slimy tactics. Probably good for my health to dump it - reading it always raised my blood pressure!

They had reports of violent attacks but spiked the reports for over two years: Assaults, grabbing women violently around the necks, ramming them into the wall, throwing ashtrays at them, etc. etc.

Gray Davis throws violent tantrums just like a girl. Guess why.

Just a note that cancelling a subscription isn't enough - subscriptions don't mean squat. What you need to do is contact their major advertisers and threaten to boycott. Just pick one like Robinson-May or something. Now that will mean something.

I can say that the Los Angeles Times has been taking a major beating because their liberal bias makes even the New York Times look positively conservative in comparison. And you wonder why Bill O'Reilly has railed against the Los Angeles Times over the last year or so.

Well, that's kind of interesting! I'm surprised Reuters is reporting this. The LA Times was clearly trying to do the work of the Dem party, of its own will and free of charge. Sort of a like being a volunteer ... uh, lady of the night.
