SACRAMENTO — Faced with the possibility that he could lose his office, Gov. Gray Davis has rushed to fill vacancies that have languished for months and even years, giving seats on boards and commissions to large campaign donors and positioning members of his inner circle for prestigious judgeships.

In recent months Davis has made 359 selections for posts ranging from positions on the UC Board of Regents and the California Parks and Recreation Commission to those on less visible boards dealing with police officer training and workplace regulation.

Judicial nominations have also shot up. In the last 10 weeks, Davis has made more than twice as many appointments as he made earlier in the year. More are expected in coming days

Davis is a snake. And he knows where the power is: the courts and the universities.

Best solution is to eliminate all of the new positions from the budget.

I just hope that the next Calipooia governor does some serious firing instead of being "kinder and gentler" like Bush.

I won't happen. It's not part of the "Two-Party Cartel". BTW do you mean kinder & gentler as in (1) Islam is a religion of peace or (2) not securing our borders & GW telling Hspanics this very week, Mi casa es su casa. or how about the Bush foundation putting TEDDY KENNEDY up as a nominee for the foundation award. And it is all of GWs boys in the New World Order who are supporting Arnold & wanting McClintock out of the race.

Well, I hope that there are simple or creative ways for his successor to undo all or most of those.
Total elimination of commisions, budget control, line item veto, forced resignations, whatever it takes.

Can these people be summarily fired, without cause?

If they are "appointees", why not? They work at the pleasure of the Governor.

I suggest a serious housecleaning. Fire about 1000 Davis stooges for starters.
