Found this one as well, again, thought it might be of general Interest.
Sorry for all the pings, but you are the only one I can remember that might have an interest and a list.

We've had asteroid threads before. I'll just let this one sit here. No ping list this time. I don't want to abuse my 100 names.

"If there is absolutely nothing you can do about it - you can't intercept it, you can't move people out of the way - then it makes no sense to incur social costs from whatever panic or overreaction there will be," argued Geoffrey SommerWhat an idiotic, moronic statement. There is no way that he, or anyone, could ever be that omniscient.
Of course I would like to know. Could everybody do something to escape? No. Could everybody do something that might make it more likely that some would escape? Yes.

I would want to know. I promise not to go on a looting rampage.
But I would like a chance to spend the last days with my loved ones.

then it makes no sense to incur social costs from whatever panic or overreaction there will be,"We're talking about extinction here and this goombah is talking about "social costs".
Why not pay whatever it costs, there's going to be nothing left to buy anyway.
If the earth is going to be hit with an asteroid or meteor of enough size to bring about extinction, you bet I want to know!
How else am I going to get my survival gear together? ;^)

Rev 8:8-9
The second angel sounded his trumpet, and something like a huge mountain, all ablaze, was thrown into the sea. A third of the sea turned into blood, a third of the living creatures in the sea died, and a third of the ships were destroyed. Would you want to know if this were coming true?

I would want to know. I could at least try to plan for it, even if it were an extinction level event.
Someone will live, may as well be me :)
This also reminds me of Niven's Footfall and an idea proposed in the 70s to put tungsten rods on Sats and launch them towards bombing targets. Today, they could GPS guide these things in...the ultimate bunker busters....Nuke level explosions without any fallout.

We have the technology to shoot a Patriot missile armed with a nuke to either break up an inbound rock or deflect it away prior to entering our atmosphere..
I think...
