Why not pay whatever it costs, there's going to be nothing left to buy anyway.

This also reminds me of Niven's Footfall and an idea proposed in the 70s to put tungsten rods on Sats and launch them towards bombing targets. Today, they could GPS guide these things in...the ultimate bunker busters....Nuke level explosions without any fallout.
