GAZA, Oct 5, 2003 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- A top aide to Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat announced Sunday that Arafat is intending to declare a ceasefire initiative with Israel within the coming 72 hours. "The coming 72 hours are carrying a political initiative that President Arafat is intending to declare to reinforce the activities of the new Palestinian government headed by Prime Minister-designate Ahmed Qurei, or Abu Alla," Arafat's aide Nabil Abu Rudeineh told reporters.
Well-informed Palestinian sources said the important part of Arafat's initiative "is to call for an immediate and mutual ceasefire between Israel and the Palestinians."
"The political initiative would give the new government a strong push to manifest the aspirations of the Palestinians and keep their achievements and to respond to all the signed agreements, including the roadmap peace plan," said Abu Rudeineh. He said the Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC) is scheduled to convene on Wednesday at Arafat's headquarters in the West Bank town of Ramallah to approve the new government.
Arafat had chaired two separate meetings of Palestinian mainstream Fatah central committee and the PLO executive committee, discussing some of the urgent issues, Abu Rudeineh said.
He described the Israeli threats following Saturday's suicide bombing attack in northern Israeli coastal city of Haifa, in which 19 people were killed, as "dangerous."
He also called on the United States and quartet committee, which groups the United Nations, United States, Russia and the European Union, to press for Israeli self-control in action against the Palestinians.

He asks for a cease fire only when he is losing. Israel must have done something right.

There has never - yet - been a cease-fire declared that was worth any more than the paper it was printed on.
Arafat can claim cease-fire all he wants, and his followers will never listen. You know, those followers that swear allegiance to him, but only as long the orders from the top involve killing innocent Israelis. This has been proven over and over again.
To: Oldeconomybuyer; All
I ask everyone who supports Israel's right to defend it's citizens to write an email to President Bush at
president@whitehouse.gov to him know that you support Israel sending Syria the message: "You may no longer support terrorism against our citizens with impunity."
This is a message that is long overdue in my view.
As to the posted story about Arafat the archterrorist is going to declare a "truce": What a joke! Arafat, aka Husseini the Nazi lover, is just afraid the IDF may come after him next. Arafat's words are the words of a terrorist; words which have been proven to be without any veracity at all.
Death to all terrorists! Jail for all the terrorist's supporters. (actually impossible because then we'd have to jai a bunch of Syrian and Iranian government officials).
"Off with their heads!" "Off with his heads"

Very convenient after this.

Entire families were decimated in yesterday's devastating terrorist massacre in Haifa, with the bloodshed spanning three generations in two different families. Among the 19 victims were five members of each of two different families, three husband-and-wife pairs, three children, a baby, and four Christian Arabs.
Five members of the Zer-Aviv family of Kibbutz Yagur, southeast of Haifa, were murdered: Bruriah, 59; her son Betzalel, 30, and his wife Keren, 29; and their children Liran, 4, and Noyah, 14 months. They will be buried on Tuesday afternoon.
Five members of the Almog family of Haifa were murdered: Ze'ev, 71, former head of the Naval Officers Academy in Acre, and his wife Ruth, 70; their son Moshe, 43, Moshe's son Tomer, 9; and Assaf Shteier, 10, son of Ze'ev and Ruth's daughter Galit. Ze'ev Almog was a heroic figure in the Israel Navy, a member of the delegation that accompanied the first submarines to Israel, and commander of the Livyatan submarine - a twin sister to the famous Dakar that sank on its way to Israel in 1968. His nephew is Maj.-Gen. Doron Almog, who served until recently as IDF Commander of the Southern Region.
Mark Biano, 29, and his wife Naomi, 25, of Haifa. The couple had no children. Nir Regev, 25, of Nahariya, son of the current Naval Officers Academy head, Lt.-Col. (res.) Eli Regev. Tzvi Bahat, 35, of Haifa. Irena Sofrin, 38, Kiryat Bialik. Her husband and two children were wounded. Four Christian Arabs: Usama Najar, 27, and Matanes Karkabi, 29, of Wadi Nisnas in Haifa; Hana Naim Francis, 39, and his cousin Sharbal Matar, 23, of Fasuta in the Galilee.

BABY KILLED IN ROSH HASHANAH ATTACK

Seven-month-old Shaked Avraham was one of two victims
in the attack Friday night at the settlement of Negohot
|
An Islamic Jihad terrorist murdered a seven-month-old baby and a 26-year-old man in the West Bank settlement of Negohot on Friday night, opening fire on a home filled with people sharing a Rosh Hashana meal.
Eyal Yeberbaum, 27, of Negohot, south of Hebron, was killed in his home during the holiday meal on the eve of Rosh Hashana when a Palestinian terrorist who infiltrated the settlement opened fire with an M-16 assault rifle.

The problem with Arafat's "ceasefires" is that by ceasefire he means to tie Israel's hands because his "ceasefires" require Israel to stop going after the terrorists and their supporters.

Cease-fire?
So Arafat is admitting that he is behind these attacks?

The real translation is that Arafat senses he is on very thin ice once again, so it's time to play the peacemaker - for a short season.

I guess I'm confused. Arafat has denounced the violence and has taken steps to try to find and stop the terrorist groups. He said so. Arafat tried to create a new governmental leader with not one, but two different presidents instead of himself so he couldn't be identified with the terrorists. He said so. He couldn't find the terrorists that were bombing Israeli women and children on busses, religious places, and in markets. He said so. Now he is going to call a cease fire of a war he said didn't exist, with the okay of people he hasn't found, coming from a compound full of weapons, (or used to be before it was made into rubble), while the Israeli government is still talking of exiling him. Yeah, so he says.
