Message from Siegfried

All of us in the Siegfried & Roy family are deeply saddened by Roy's injury at last Friday's performance. Roy remains in stable but critical condition at University Medical Center in Las Vegas.

For more than four decades, I have had the great privilege of standing at the side of this remarkable man, and I will continue to do so during this very challenging time. We are grateful and overwhelmed with the tremendous support we have received from around the world, and ask for your continued prayers and reflections.

I had the pleasure of working for them occasionally over the past two years, tho I did not meet them. My coworkers who did meet with them found them to be the most gracious and delightful hosts, in every way, with no compelling reason to be so.

If you've not been to their site, it's worth looking at, if only to see the work they've done rescuing the lions and tigers. Some of the things they've been able to do are simply amazing.

They do realize the extent that they've become a 'cultural irony', and they've embraced it and they're laughing with us.

I wish them the best.

I would like to take a moment to ask for donations.

It should be clear to all conservatives by now that the left intends to demonize us. They don't just disagree with us, they hate us. And worse, they want to get other people to hate us.

Places like Free Republic drive the left batty.

Please donate. Thanks for your consideration.

I didn't know they had families, I thought they lived together in unholy... never mind.

Just how many Siegfried and how many Roys are there?

They have a dedicated staff, and a wide circle of friends. If you do a little asking around, you'll be humbled when you find out the breadth and depth of their generosity.

Whatever their private life is, they've kept it private.

"I wish them the best"

As do I. How rare nowadays, to hear of graciousness and celebrity in the same sentence! I wish them healing, and recovery.

They are two of Nevada's leading citizens, indeed icons, and have been for many years. Everyone here in the Silver State is pulling for Roy.

I've never been to Vegas or seen their show. I have seen clips of them working with animals.
I love big cats. They are my favorite animal. There is a graciousness about them that other animals lack.
The people who work with these animals have something special in their making that not everyone has. Animals can sense that. I've always been kind of jealous that I don't have that "something".
I have heard of the charity work these two guys do and the rescuing of exotic animals and I have nothing but respect for them.
They are very likable individuals and I wish a speedy recovery. I also wish the best for the tiger.

There is some positive news this AM:

Mauled magician showing 'limited communication'

LAS VEGAS, Nevada (CNN) -- Roy Horn of Siegfried and Roy has shown some "limited communication" but remained in critical but stable condition after being mauled by one of the tigers in his Las Vegas show.

A seven-year-old white tiger attacked Horn during a Friday night performance on the Las Vegas strip -- the magician and trainer's 59th birthday.

"All of us are taking a measure of hope from the fact that he's had this ability to communicate even as limited as it may be," said MGM Mirage spokesman Alan Feldman.

The 210 crew members of the long running show were told Saturday evening it was closed indefinitely and Mirage managers suggested "they may very well need to consider other options in their careers."

The tiger lunged at Horn's neck about half-way through the show, and dragged him off stage, audience members said. "He looked like a rag doll in his mouth," said Kirk Baser, from Pennsylvania.

Emergency officials arrived at the MGM Mirage Hotel-Casino around 8:20 p.m. and treated Horn for massive blood loss before he was rushed to University Medical Center for emergency surgery.

Horn was talking at the time emergency workers arrived, but had trouble breathing, Clark County Fire spokesman Bob Leinbach said.

Horn, the darker-haired member of Siegfried & Roy, was born in Nordenham, Germany on October 3, 1944. Combining magic with tiger stunts, the flamboyant duo has performed on the Las Vegas strip for nearly 30 years.

Tiger in quarantine

The tiger that attacked Horn is currently in quarantine and no one else was injured in the attack, MGM Mirage spokesman Alan Feldman said Saturday (early Sunday GMT).

Comedian Penn Jillette of the duo Penn & Teller visited the hospital Saturday afternoon to show support for his long-time friends and find out more about Horn's condition, he said.

"It's really not good," Jillette told reporters. "I mean, when I talked to Siegfried last night, he said, you know, it was going to be OK. You have no idea what that means. It means a friend that he's loved dearly and worked with for 28 years -- his heart's still beating, and there's still hope."

Jillette said Horn had always worked well with the big cats on stage.

"Every living thing goes crazy. Every species," he said. "And there's nothing -- no fingers to point. There's nothing. It's just a really bad thing happening to a really important, wonderful, very, very strong guy. I mean his strength is breathtaking."

Audience members shocked

Audience members were shocked to realize the attack was not part of an illusion or magic trick.

Amy Sherman, who was sitting in the front row with her mother about 10 yards away from the stage, said the attack happened right after Horn introduced the tiger.

"Right after that, the tiger kind of turned its head and bit him on the arm," Sherman said. "Roy started taking a microphone and started whapping the tiger on the head."

The tiger, who was on a short leash, then dragged Horn to the ground and they struggled before the tiger dragged him behind a curtain by his neck, she said. Trainers on stage rushed to aid Horn, trying to subdue the tiger.

"We just heard all this commotion behind the curtain and you could hear Roy scream," Sherman said. "Everyone at our table was kind of looking at each other, like 'Oh my God,'" she said.

After about a minute, which Sherman's mother said seemed like forever, Siegfried appeared on stage.

"You could tell he was really shook up, and he just said, 'I'm sorry but the show is over, and you know, the show has been canceled'" Joyce Edenholl said.

"Everyone there I think , thought it was part of the act, because no one really freaked out," Kirk Baser said. "When it grabbed him and dragged him off the stage, I thought maybe it was like some magic trick where they switch a rag doll or something."

A group of Australians said they witnessed the attack from the front row of the crowded theater, and also thought it was just part of the show.

"A lady ran past me, freaking out and it was then I sort of, in the back of my mind, thought now this isn't part of the show," said David Strudwick. "And then you look at the staff and they had a bit of horror in their eyes and ... it was like, wait a second, it may not be a part of the show."

It has been mentioned that 300 people work on this production. The Mirage is trying to fit them all into jobs.

I have had the great privilege of standing at the side of this remarkable man,

And in back and underneath him as well!

Glad he is going to make it, the world needs eccentrics, it would be boring without them.

In Ocala FL a couple had an animal act they showed for years at circuses and fairs.

The husband was killed by a tiger, but the animal was spared due to the wifes assertations that it was a freak accident. A year later the tiger killed another associate and was itself killed, by the police if I recall correctly.

Very sad. You're right, of course, the world does need people like this. Life would be exceedingly dull otherwise.

Literally, only God knows about their lives, and it's up to God to judge. They seem to have been decent people and they were certainly great enteratiners. Roy - and Siegfried - have my prayers, and I'm sure those of most Freepers.

Whatever their private life is, they've kept it private.

I can live with that.

It is a lot better than; "We're here to put our (private life) in your face, GET USED TO IT!"

All that said, I hope Roy survives and recovers.

Being gnawed by a TIGER! I thought I had bad days at work. I was wrong.
