LOS ANGELES, Oct. 5 -- California long has been on the cutting edge of America's politics, and Tuesday's historic gubernatorial recall election is no exception. Once again, the nation's most populous state is helping to define the politics of discontent.
In the final hours of an extraordinary campaign, the spotlight is on two men: Gov. Gray Davis (D), the career politician who is in grave danger of losing his job just 11 months after winning reelection; and Arnold Schwarzenegger, the Republican film star who was pulling away from his rivals just before being hit by charges of sexual misconduct and of once having praised Adolf Hitler.
But the recall represents more than a battle between these two men and over which party controls the governor's office for the next three years. At stake is the future direction of politics here and perhaps nationally. Will Tuesday's election lead to a change in the political climate here, one that helps break the partisan standoff that has frustrated efforts to resolve the state's fiscal crisis, or will it lead to more partisan warfare, gridlock and political retribution -- and more voter disaffection?
Almost no matter the outcome, the aftershocks of Tuesday's balloting are likely to roil California politics for months. Already there is talk that, if Schwarzenegger wins, some Democrats may seek to have him recalled. The reverberations may ripple through national politics just as the 2004 election season begins to heat up, although it is not likely that the recall process itself will be exported widely.

The reporter, Balz, posits two alternative outcomes. But, if I'm not mistaken, he interprets a Davis victory as "breaking the partisan standoff", while it is Schwarzenegger's election that would lead to "more partisan warfare, gridlock and political retribution".
In Balz's mind, then, it is "heads-Democrats win, tails-Republicans lose".
Pretty simple-minded analysis, if you ask me. Bias aside...
Someone needs to wake Rip Van Winkle up because California hasn't been leading **anything** recently.
If California finally elects a Republican governor, the state will have tepidly swung toward the Conservative tidal wave that has swept Republicans in the rest of the nation into control of the House, the Senate, the Presidency, most state legislatures, and most state governorships.
To which I'll cheer and say "keep moving our way, Cali."
I'm sure that the drafts for the lawsuits are already waiting to be filed. It will be interesting to see how the 9th circus handles this again, since they had to bitch-slap themselves a few weeks ago over their last ruling.
Yeah, I guess Alabama is where everything happens, gaining the nations attention, affecting the entire country.....
You need to understand, California is a trend setter, for good and bad. It's a world class mega economic power, even in a bad economy, it the 5th largest economy on earth, things that happen in California, will affect the entire country, like it or not, for good or bad.
History is being written here Tuesday, as the people of the great state of California put a political rope around the head of the extreme left...
Without a doubt, times are a changing again, and again are being led by California.
Win at any cost Rinoism has obliterated any differentiation between Demrats and Republicans for years in this state.
Certainly, in the instant case it matters not if tax-'n-spend Davis or tax-'n-spend Schwarzenegger win. The joke will be on a gullible electorate to self-absorbed to care about the state debt, and how it must be fixed without enslaving the next three generations of Californians.
Republican Tom McClintock has a real plan to attack the financial cancer created by the one party system we have. It is Tom McClintock who can stop the gravy-train the globalists have been running out of California.
They fear the name, 'Governor Tom McClintock' more than the potential of a hostile takeover . Their demlican puppets are the traitors at the center of this state's financial cancer, and both the incumbent and the candidate representing corruption Hollywood style will do the bidding of the puppeteers.......so long as the fruits and nuts vote according to plan.
You know, little inconsequential things such as training the Tuskeegee Airmen to be the first Black fighter pilots in WW2. Leading the entire civil rights movement (You know, like beating Bull Conner, his dogs, and his firehoses). Standing up for the Ten Commandments and religious expression for all. Voting for Bush, etc.
Don't get me wrong, California is a great state. But just because it is a great state doesn't mean that it is leading every possible trend.
The rest of the nation has been moving towards Conservatism for years, and by Tuesday, California may very well have taken the first step on that journey, too. I welcome the trend.
But that's hardly **leading** the charge, which was my point.
You don't quite grasp it. California has already been a conservative state, and back the other way several times.
It's a fight for the crown jewel of this great country.
It's just started, just sit back and watch, or just wait, as the social, political revolution will eventually make it to Alabama.
The big picture? It's a struggle for America, being played out in California....
Exactly. The one and only thing I remember the libs being happy about after the last national election was keeping their beloved Davis as governor of CA. And it looks like they might lose even that...BWAHAHAHAHA!
Whoops
Hasn't been leading in anthing huh?
Except for the minor fact that California is an economic powerhouse, leading the *entire* country
Just a minor little fact that can and will affect every state in this country.
Looks like Rip Van Winkle actually resides outside of California.....
Do you think that we haven't already kicked out most of our Democrats and turned Conservative already??
What revolution will finally reach us...one that says, Oh, you guys were already here?!
Whoops

Timewise. I'm not arguing the size or dynamism of California's economy, but rather, that the most recent of all political trends hasn't started in California. I mean, California hasn't exactly been voting for Bush 1, Dole, or Bush 2 like the rest of the nation...at least not yet.
Like you, I'm excited that California may soon join the rest of the nation's right-ward path.
