As the strains of the beautiful and solemn melody of "Kol Nidre "(all vows) fills synagogues throughout the world at sundown this coming Sunday, Oct. 5, Yom Kippur, the most sacred day on the Jewish calendar, will begin.
"Kol Nidre" is sung three times during the beginning of the service, thereby signifying the annulment of all vows and oaths made by man to God and not carried out are hereby canceled and made void.
This very solemn day is one filled with prayers of confession in which forgiveness is asked for sins and are recited 10 times. The Amidah, the prayer of praise and petition is said silently five times while standing. Many pious Jews remain standing during the entire day of prayer.
