Oct. 4, 2003 US, UK, France condemn Haifa attack By ASSOCIATED PRESS

US President George W. Bush on Saturday called the attack in Haifa "a despicable act of terrorism."
At least 19 people were killed when a Palestinian woman blew herself up at a beach-front restaurant in Haifa in one of the deadliest attacks in three years.
"I condemn unequivocally the vicious act of terrorism committed today in Haifa," Bush said in a statement. "This murderous action, aimed at families gathered to enjoy a Sabbath lunch, killed and injured dozens of men, women, and children."
He added: "This despicable attack underscores once again the responsibility of Palestinian authorities to fight terror, which remains the foremost obstacle to achieving the vision of two states living side by side in peace and security."
Bush said the Palestinian leadership "must dedicate itself to dismantling the infrastructure of terror and preventing the kind of murderous actions that we witnessed today."
The president said nothing about how Israel should retaliate. In the past, Bush has often urged Israel to consider the implications its actions will have on peace efforts.
The Bush administration renewed demands Saturday that Palestinian leaders dismantle terrorist networks.
"There can be no excuse for the violence and terrorist attacks the Israeli people have been forced to endure," State Department spokesman Joanne Moore said. "We condemn in the strongest possible terms these horrific acts of terrorism," Moore said.
"This clearly illustrates why the Palestinian Authority must act now to dismantle terrorist capacity and networks that perpetrate such attacks and prevent any future attacks," she said.
British Prime Minister Tony Blair expressed outrage Saturday at the suicide bombing in the Israeli port of Haifa. "I am outraged by the latest terrorist horror in Israel," Blair said in a statement released by his Downing St. office.
"My deepest condolences go to family and friends of the victims caught in this attack. "Such incidents are always sickening, but even more so when they involve children," he said.
"The United Kingdom unequivocally condemns terrorist action against Israelis, as we do everywhere.
"These attacks do not serve the interests of the Palestinian people," said Blair, who was in Rome on Saturday for a summit on a European Union constitution.
French foreign minister, condemning the deadly suicide bombing in Haifa on Saturday, said it expects the Palestinian Authority to work to end terrorist actions and asked Israel to show restraint "despite the anger and the pain."
Terrorism "can only weaken the Palestinian cause and delay the solution to the conflict," a statement by Foreign Minister Dominique de Villepin said.
He asked "the highest officials" in the Palestinian Authority, a reference to Yasser Arafat, to condemn such acts and "fight unendingly to end the activities of terrorist groups."
De Villepin's statement also asked Israeli authorities, "despite the anger and the pain, to show restraint and abstain from all irreparable decisions in order to preserve the chances for restarting the political process."
Israel has hinted it might "remove" Arafat, implying expel him, despite fears that such a move would further exacerbate the crisis.
Wow! Tough words and 40 megatons would go a long way to solving this problem. However, the 40 megatons will probably be more significant than more words.
