Sorry for this non political thread but...since dinner time Thursday, Oct 2, I have not been able to use any search engine (google, yahoo, msn, lycos, etc.) I have tried downloading msn updates and even a new browser. Any suggestions?

We assume that you delete all temporary internet files, and rebooted the computer?

Do the search engines send you to "tweakxp"??? If so, I can help you. I just had to fix a computer that had the same trouble.

You've downloaded a Trojan. Here's the link to the Symantec advisory:

"
Symantec Security Response has received reports that visiting a specific page on www.fortunecity.com caused a popup to be displayed that redirected the visitor to a different web page. Being redirected to the web page appears to have caused the trojan to be downloaded to a visitor's system and then executed. Reports also state that the threat exploited the Internet Explorer Object Data Remote Execution vulnerability on several victims' computers to execute itself."
Well isn't that special. So your computer can now get infected simply by surfing the Web?
To: Bubba_Leroy
That's right. UNLESS you have installed the Microsoft security updates.
If you update the operating system and update your antivirus program you're a LOT less likely to catch any of these bugs. There are other security measures too, but those are basic.

Many thanks for the info. I have been downloading all the msn updates as well as the security updates. I don't know how this happened. My problem with using the symantic "fix" is that we had someone load our windows 2000 and the admin password is long gone. Any ideas of how to bypass admin rights to install the symantic fix?

As Rush would say: Get a mac!!
But then if everybody did, they'd start raising worms and growing viruses for us too. So on second thought, don't!
Kidding, of course. Good luck with your problem, I would have no idea how to help you. Depending on your depth of investment in the P.C. world and how frequently these problems plague you, switching may be an extremely smart move.

Hmmm..I didn't see where you had to run the thing under the Admin logon, but I haven't read the whole thing.
You can try using "Administrator" with a blank password.

Nope. Full patches wouldn't have helped. There is no patch yet for this. AV would have helped only after a few days when people finally realized what was happening.
