Howard Cosell: ***When he said of an african american running back, 'look at that monkey run,' many branded him a racist, but he explained that, he refers to his own grandchildren as monkeys. Civil Rights activists and many African Americans supported Cosell, saying he was not a racist. *** Source

I see no damage as a result, except to his plans for getting back into sports broadcasting.

Perhaps he can start up a EIB sports network on the radio or start a new cable channel!

The drug thing will blow away soon. It is of no consequence except fodder for his enemies.(which are many)

"I haven't yet gotten to the bottom of what all this is about," Limbaugh said

Like O.J. vowing to look tirelessly for the real killers?

How on earth could anyone expect Limbaugh to discuss the drug allegations , when anything he says on air could come back and bite him on the *** in a court of law? He has to remain silent for now!

Civil Rights activists and many African Americans supported Cosell, saying he was not a racist.

Cosell like Rush got a little full of himself from time to time. The reason Americans of African descent stood by Cosell was his strong ties to Cassius Clay. Cosell outspokenly objected to Clay being stripped of his heavyweight boxing titles because of Clay's refusal to be drafted into the Army during the Vietnam War.

I find the author's use of this headline (referencing the handicap of being mute) extremely distasteful - especially in light of the fact that Rush is hearing impaired. It's so offensive, in fact, I think the writer and/or whoever wrote the headline should be fired.

Rush is the leader of a grass roots movement, not just some joe blow sports fan. He hurt the cause by acting like an arrogrant, pompous, racially insensitive, white guy.

I posted a vanity about what constitutes a racist statement, and it was pulled literally seconds later. The most I could get out of JimRob was that it was 'racist troll bait'. One of the example sentences I used is the one you used, attributed to Cosell.

How can we ever talk about racism without talking about what it means to say something racist?

That was the first post OR REPLY I've had pulled in my nearly three-year tenure at FR. I'm not opusing or whining, just frustrated, because now I'm afraid to even utter the word 'black'. How can we criticize the media for making people live in fear of being branded racists, and then be made to feel that way here? If anyone's interested, I'll email you the original post. I will respect Jim's right to pull it, and his request that I not repost it.

I wrote Rush a short email of encouragement and love. He got about 35 thousand of them by Friday morning. His best friend is Clarence Thomas, I don't think Rush is racist. I think he just speaks the truth, and liberals can't take the truth. On the drugs, I am waiting to hear more... but if the claims against him were two years ago and the cops didn't come after him by now, he must not be guilty.

Addicts have no problem with denying their drug use or drug problem. They are practiced, skillful and professional performers that can lie very convincingly. They are also skilled and practiced victims that have no problem portraying their victimology for the maxim effect. Rush may well be caught up in a drug investigation and might have obtained some drugs from these people in some misguided fashion that was illegal, but Rush does not portray any signs of a "drug problem" or drug abuse.

Put your money on Rush as having the last word on this subject. I hope the Democratic/Clinton smear machine gets what it has coming to it.

“One source told Fox News that Limbaugh was implicated by Cline and her husband David, and also by “other suppliers” whom the source did not name. The Enquirer paid the Clines a six-figure fee for their story, according to the source. “

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,98871,00.html

I thought the above was an interesting angle and quote from a Fox News story. Consider, that in addition to the Cline’s criminal history, we have financial motive here for the housekeeper who was paid a “six-figure” fee for their story by The National Enquirer (a tabloid rag under liberal ownership). Now that much incentive might be too much for anyone with questionable history to resist.

Let’s look at the big picture here; We have several targets that DemonRats want to take out right now. 1. President Bush….2. Arnold S. in California (not because he’s necessarily conservative, but because they perceive him as a major threat to their plan to destroy California completely). 3. Rush Limbaugh…(single greatest threat liberals, socialists/communists, DemonRats and general enemies of America have ever faced).

Is it irony and coincidence that we have major stories breaking just days before the California elections…at the same time the media is harping CONTINUOUSLY at how quickly Bush’s poll numbers are dropping, and no signs of WMDs in Iraq yet….at the SAME time, this stuff on Rush and Arnold breaks? Irony and coincidence? Hardly. This is part of a plan by people who are completely lacking in morality, or consciousness, who actively want to destroy America as we know it..and they are simultaneously going after their arch enemies with one fell swoop.

Now, it does seem to me, that if Rush never used pain killers, he would just come out and say that this was all “bull”, but I suspect what happened was that there was a time he was probably using them fairly heavily by subscription, for legitimate medical reasons. His housekeeper may have even run errands for him to pick them up….legally. So she knew about it. I think this is probably a ripe situation for a set up. Someone in the Democratic party was setting Rush up for a fall..they saw what they percieved to be an opening in his “controversial” comments (they knew he was bound to make given that was his job description) they waited patiently and when they smelled blood in the water, they moved in for the kill. I think Rush knows it’s a set up, and that’s why he’s being cautious about commenting now. He wants his own lawyers to investigate what these people are trying to do to him first, what “evidence” they might have manufactured before he comments. I’d say that is fairly wise precaution, even if he is completely innocent given the absolute depths his enemies would go to destroy him.

These things don’t happen simultaneously by accident. If I were to speculate, (and it’s not REALLY much speculation) I’d say DemonRats are just using this opportunity to go after their major targets…being the soul-less bastards they are. The ends justify the means, after all. It doesn’t matter who they have to kill, who they have to destroy, so long as the ends are met. They have no moral conscience or compass to prevent them from pulling out all stops at the slightest opportunity. They are the desperate enemies within…..and they are dangerous. Make no mistake about it, they want Rush out of the way, and they would stop at nothing to accomplish that. I think that’s exactly what we are seeing take place here now.

I can't believe anyone would attack Rush Limbaugh over the supposed use of illicit pain killers. I never listen to him, and I am not a fan, but let's have some sympathy for him. Everyone understands pain and ultimately most people believe in the freedom to choose for themselves.

Someone please help me out here with my ignorance of the law.

If Wilma Cline wore a wire for immunity from prosecution and

If accepting money from the Enquirer for her story automatically recuses her from testifying for the prosecution, then

What value is she in a case against Rush Limbaugh (unless they had used the wire to bust him as the deal went down)?

who proudly call themselves "ditto-heads" for their frequent agreement with Limbaugh

That's not what the term ditto-head means.

That approach seemed just fine with his loyal listeners, who proudly call themselves "ditto-heads" for their frequent agreement with Limbaugh.

My recollection of the reason for ditto is slightly different.

When Rush first went national, many callers would start their comments by saying something to the effect of "Rush, I've been a conservative for many years, and I found a breath of fresh air on your radio show. My family and I love your show. . ."

After a few dozen of those introductory comments, a caller said "Ditto" to the previous caller's introduction and went on to the real reason for his call. Then the rest of the callers starting saying "Ditto" to avoid syrupy introductions.

Since many of the Dittoheads call to disagree with Rush, Ditto seems more of a shorthand for "I love your show" than a code for "I agree with Rush."

I wonder if other Freepers have a different take on this.
