The Public Schools can only be considered a failure if you think that their goals have to do with individual children achieving literacy and numeracy; if the goal, after all, has been to socialize the children to accept their lot in life and position in society, then it's been a great success!

Nothing truly worthwhile is gained without some sacrifice - unfortunately with Private school education it will take MONETARY sacrifice and this is the GOD of Americans today...So I guess the big question is: who's willing to drive a 10 year old car instead of their new SUV in order to give their kids a hope for their future?

I think that this says more about the Arkansas schools ( and hence the CLinton's) than it does about school systems in general. There are some districts around us that use this silly IB curriculum. Our school district ( and many like it) does not. My daughter is learning almost the same things I learned in school over 30 years ago. I agree that if your public schools are as bad as this young lady says her's was, then by all means ditch it. Not all fit this category.

I bet you got that JimHunt ferm of NC edukashun. You know the one where they freeze teacher pay 20 years ago, and then wonder 20 years later why teachers are leaving in droves and the students are dumb as bricks?

The Public Schools can only be considered a failure if you think that their goals have to do with individual children achieving literacy and numeracy; if the goal, after all, has been to socialize the children to accept their lot in life and position in society, then it's been a great success! Right on target. Public School's job is to create group dependence and conformity. My wife is a math tutor who comes into contact with kids from local schools and she hears about the conditions in their classrooms. One of her students described how their teacher had them work on a set of problems in groups. The teacher then took each group's set of papers, shuffled them and pulled out one paper. That paper's grade was assigned to each individual in that group.
This kind of lesson plan could be passed off as teacher laziness, but the effect is certainly insidiously conformist. I don't believe that each teacher is knowingly trying to crush each student's individuality, but rather the whole establishment of educational training encourages focusing on group outcome. Other instances come to mind, such as a group math teachers not allowing an exceptional student take part in a math tournament because it would not be "fair" to the other participants. The schools are succeeding quite well if their goals is to teach that conformity is rewarded and individuality is shunned. It's disturbing enough to read about it happening in other schools across the country, but it is shocking when you see it happening right in your own town.

Your FR page doesn't have which state you're from, but I will assume that you are from somewhere the NEA is not in control of your teachers/administrators.
Are you sure that your children are not being taught that the USA is a democracy (leftist code for communism)? Instead of what it really is? A Constitutional Representative Republic.
Ask them question relating to "RIGHT" and "WRONG" - you may find that they have been convinced of "Moral Relativism" - no such thing as right or wrong. If they answer all your "sneaky" questions correctly ..... CONGRATULATIONS to your teachers! Schools! etc!!

Teachers have historically been underpaid and terribly underappreciated. The perfect recipients for the communist form of propaganda - unions.
We need to START teacher salary at least at the level a junior (first line) supervisor in the general work field would make. Most are at this level to start as appropriate.
The problem from that point on is the lack of raises, promotions, accolades to the DESERVING teachers. This is where the unions have destroyed the American system - refusing to allow for MERIT based systems - you get paid what you deserve.
The Unions are necessary to keep the abuses away from merit systems, but they need to promote the merit system.
Right now, the UNIONS only help the incopetent and undeserving. Like the DNC!

The perfect recipients for the communist form of propaganda - unions. That's a maybe but NC doesn't have an official teachers union. It's against the law in this state

So I guess the big question is: who's willing to drive a 10 year old car instead of their new SUV in order to give their kids a hope for their future? Will my 1987 sunbird be ok? I think I can get a few more years out of it before replacing it with another old (inexpensive) car.

The trouble is, too many people
like conformity and dependence so long as it suits their agenda.
The entire public school system has become insidiously anti-American.

I recently enrolled my youngest in public school. So far, she has a huge workload for a fourth grader, and is able to self-choose the 25 books she must read by the end of the year.
However, I have to say the biggest difference I have found is the curriculuum itself...it is a dead curriculuum. The idiotic standardized tests, do one thing only...they promote a picture of the child as automaton. Natural intelligence, imagination and intuitive thinking are pushed to the wayside in favor of the projected "ideal" answer.
The school also seems to go out of it's way to promote blatant commercialism...whether it's Disney junk, or asking the kids to write about their favorite film or television program.
The one plus has been the loving nature of the teachers in this small public school, it's just so unfortunate that they have little freedom in choosing the "way" in which to teach.

The entire public school system has become insidiously anti-American.Yes indeed. It destroys individuality, it destroys parent-child bonds, it destroys competition and a desire to excel.
The trouble we have is that many parents and grandparents went to good public schools and they do not realize how low and depraved the schools have become. We need to open their eyes that these are not the public schools they went to.
