TOM MCCLINTOCK DAILY EDITION - 10/3/03 (CA GOVERNOR'S RACE)

Posted on 10/03/2003 6:56:05 AM PDT by Rabid Dog

Please post local, regional, national news and views on Tom McClintock. This is a news and info thread. The following guidelines for posting are per DoughtyOne's most excellent suggestion.

McClintock Camp - Supporters or Defenders

Please post positive articles about Tom's policies and leave the Schwarzenegger bashing to the Democrats.

Schwarzenegger Camp - Supporters or Defenders

The call for McClintock to withdraw right now, or the tactic of calling him and his followers names for not doing so, is not productive and isn't good for the party.

Please save the Rino Arnold/Unelectable Tom rants for other threads.

"Dear Mr. Reagan, it should be obvious to you now that you can never be elected governor. Please put aside your ego, for the good of our party, and get behind the one man who is moderate enough to appeal to California voters - - San Francisco Mayor George Christopher."

Thanks for these daily threads. I wonder if anyone will show up on this thread in the next few minutes and start bashing Tom McClintock? Hope not. But it may happen. If so, I think that person is a tasteless, supreme jerk.

Good luck on the election!

Good morning everyone. The next few days are going to be rough. RNC/CA G.O.P. operatives are going to be posting - hard. Recent talking points include:

Anti-Arnold is anti-Tom
Tom needs to drop out now!
Tom only received 15% of the electorate vote.

The only one I'm going to comment on is the 15% number. That is half of the conservative base - still holding firm despite millions of dollars spent, and personal chits cashed in to get people to try to convince these voters that they really don't want to support Tom - the man who best embraces the platform of the Republican Party. Would also like to point out that Tom is now a break-away candidate. His name is known in 96% of California households and he is on the national radar screen as a man of integrity and vision. This is NOT what the CA G.O.P. wanted to happen.

I'm not going to go into the allegations against Arnold other than it isn't a "smear campaign". Much of the sexual harassment stuff was in the press last time he decided to run for governor. His handlers and I'm sure many of his endorsees knew about it way before Bob Mullholland decided to remind everyone publically. Arnold has admitted to it and apologized - which does separate him from Bill Clinton.

As far as the "Hilter" comment goes - it isn't an unusual sentiment for historians, military experts, but as we all know it is a death blow for politicians. Who knows if Arnold said it, if it was I'm sure it was taken out of context - unfortunately for him he didn't realize 30 years ago that he would be running for governor.

Now on to more cheerful things:

Yesterday, calcowgirl posted some interesting information on Milt Friedman and she had a couple of questions.

Re: Education, there are many conflicting stories published (e.g. degree from UCLA, Masters degree in international business, etc.) His candidate filings in Sacramento this year say: "B.A. in business and international economics, University of Wisconsin-Superior, 1980." I was curious as to how someone in Venice, Ca got a degree in Wisconsin. Apparently, a professor was a fan of his and wanted him to give some lectures on his philosophy of bodybuilding and "Staying Hungry". In exchange, he arranged to receive a degree via a "correspondence" program, in less than one year, with course credit for swimming, archery, and bodybuilding. Here are a couple recent articles that tried to tie it down, which also have some conflicts:

Duluth News Tribune

The Capital Times

Re: Milton Friedman, I remember reading the first media statements (press release?). At the time, it said Arnold EXPECTED an endorsement from Milton Friedman. It also implied that Friedman remembered Arnold from 20 years prior, vs. a recent relationship. Does anybody have a link to this, or anything that said he actually DID endorse him? Milton Friedman is now 91 years old. Decades ago, Friedman was a huge proponent of school voucher programs and other philosophies that don't fit with Arnold's current platform. An endorsement would seem inconsistent with Friedman's teachings.

A Personal Message from Tom McClintock

Dear Friends,

I'd like to ask you to vote yes on the recall...and then vote your conscience on a replacement. This time, it's just too important for any of us to sit on the sidelines.

This state is at a real turning point—and on Tuesday, we’ll make a decision that will affect us—and our children, for years to come. There are some things we differ on, sure, but here’s what we can all agree on—an honest government, fair taxes, a balanced budget, protecting our families and healing our divisions.

Now, some people say I can't win...but, if you read the polls you'll find that most people say I'm the best man for the job. Think about it. If everyone who feels that way gets out and votes for me on Tuesday—then we'll win by a landslide.

I've held my ground and fought for what I believed in. Now, it’s your turn.

Because when they count the ballots, only one vote counts—yours.

At this point, it doesn't depend on me—it depends on you.

Thank you for your continued support. Together we can and will save our state!

Tom McClintock
California State Senator

I don't have any problem with Tom and will not bash him. My problem is with people who urge others to drink Kool-aid. Their message, in style and substance, is little different than what the DNC and moveon.org put out.

I think at this point any reasonable individual would simply drop the "a vote for Tom is a vote for Bustamantte" slogan.

As an Arnold supporter, I don't think at this point anything is going to be able to stop the Arnold juggernaut. It's pretty clear Arnold knows how to handle himself in the tough situations, and I salute him for it.

A vote for Tom reduces Arnold's mandate, but is a clear vote of support for fiscal conservatism, which probably isn't going to hurt Arnold in his quest to hold the line on taxes.

I don't think Tom's career is going to be affected by sticking it out to the end.

So unless things change dramatically, a vote for Tom is a vote to support Tom's ideals, and that is no bad thing.

I would respectfully disagree on two counts.

McClintock is irreparably damaged, barring credible change of heart. First.

And, second, a vote for Tom is a vote promise-breaking, wretched leadership... AND for Florida II.

Only a SIGNIFICANT margin of victory MIGHT keep this out of the 9th Circus.

After Florida 2000 and the first 9th Circus recall decision last month, any 9th Circus attempt to invalidate the recall results this time would imho be a mistake of huge proportions in the Hegelian sense.

Remember the input here a couple of weeks ago that the clerks at the USSC all have the 'F9' key, and apparently aren't afraid to use it as often as needed... ;-)

LOL. Hope you're right!

Better still... hope we don't have to find out! I've had ENOUGH excitement. Of that kind.

I predict that Don Tomas will get 12%, with a large portion of his vote coming from the abstenees.
Those who vote for him are more interested in being able to say they "stuck by" something or other than have a Republican governor.

McClintock Can't Win? Do the Math Again

"You see, unless something happens to give Bustamante a tremendous boost, McClintock can’t possibly be a spoiler. So no one who in their heart of hearts would really rather cast a vote for McClintock than for Schwarzenegger needs to worry about being the cause of a Republican defeat if they vote their conscience. Arnold backers should just lay off the guilt trip, because it is without basis.

Maybe what some of those who say a principled conservative can’t win in California are really afraid of is not that McClintock supporters might split the ticket and cause Republicans to lose but that Tom might actually gain enough momentum to win, thus proving their pessimism unfounded. Maybe that’s why they are digging in and turning the turrets on their brethren instead of taking the battle to the foe.

Can Tom McClintock win on October 7? Yes he can. Do the math!"
